EDINGBURGH 500 Football Academy aims to promote a positive outlet for young children in the community through the participation in football.

The academy which was founded by the late retired fire officer Leroy DeGale has been in operation for over five years and caters for children between the ages of five to 17 as a community initiative to target young individuals to keep them off the streets through the use of sports.

“The main objective is to use football to make a positive impact on the community,” said Lisa Goodridge, manager of the academy. “The mission of Edinburgh 500 Football Academy is to help foster players, mental and social growth so they can reach their potential in life through their participation in football,” she said

This year the academy took part in the Republic Youth Cup in the Under-10 and Under-12 age groups, she said that it was good exposure for the youngsters.

They also participated in the Central Football Association (CFA) Indoor Tournament finishing second in both age groups.

Goodridge went on to mention that two of their Under-14 players were drafted into the national Under-14 squad but she was unable to give their names.

Some of their main players in their Under-10 team are Ethan Trotman, Afridi Sookoos who is nine. He won the Dash for Cash held at the at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Daniel Goodridge and Joaquin Villafana.
