After a largely uninspired campaign last year, 2012 league champion WASA FC continued its strong start to the TTFA National Super League season on Sunday with a 6-0 whipping of reigning title holder Guaya United, in both teams’ second match.
The result saw back-to-back wins for WASA FC, while Guaya suffered its second loss.
Keron Clarke, who scored a brace in last Wednesday’s season-opening (3-2) win over La Horquetta SA, was at it again scoring two goals in the first half, while former T&T international forward Gary Glasgow, who scored on the opening day also scored a double on Sunday.
Sheldon Nesbitt and Ethan Robinson scored the two other goals for the Waterboys. Guaya, which will compete in this year’s Pro League competition has fielded a less-than full strength team in this year’s competition.
Meanwhile, last season’s runner-up, Club Sando, which defeated Guaya 2-1 on Wednesday, played to a 3-3 draw with Petrotrin Palo Seco, which also won its opening fixture.
Club Sando opted to play the match despite the sudden death of one of its players, Marcus Lawrence, who died while training with the club on Friday. Club Sando led the match twice but conceded a penalty in the 90th minute from Shackiel Henry, which resulted in a stalemate.
The goal was also Henry’s second from as many matches.
Meanwhile, Stokely Vale got the better of Bethel United, 2-0, as the two Tobago clubs kicked off their campaigns, while Siparia Spurs sealed its first win (3-1) over 2011 champion Joe Public. In other results, Defence Force and FC Santa Rosa played to a 1-1 draw, simultaneously with newly promoted La Horquetta SA’s 2-1 win over Real Maracas.
Again, two matches (Las Lomas versus Goal City and Malabar versus 1976 FC Phoenix) were unable to play due to difficulties in securing flight accommodation. However, all matches carded for Wednesday are carded to play. All postponed matches will be played after this weekend.
