Brandon Fountain scored the only goal for West Side Super Starzs in their 1-0 win over Stokely Vale in perhaps the biggest of the many surprises of the day in the blink/ bmobile National Super League, yesterday.

In a match played at the Hasely Crawford Training Field, Mucurapo, where both sides had good  opportunities to score, Stokely Vale had the best chance early on to take the lead when a shot was taken in a crowded box which seemed to have crossed the line. The appeals were ignored.

Although both sides kept up pressure the final pass went begging on most occasions. Near to the end of the first half, West Side had themselves a great opportunity to take the lead when a neat cross from Dwayne Salazar met an attacker’s head, but the powerful final effort in front of goal went high and wide.

Despite Stokely Vale looking the stronger side at the beginning of the second half and goalkeeper Javan Seegobin being kept busy, West Side found the target. Against the run of play, fullback David Lendor took a long range shot which was fumbled by Stokely Vale goalkeeper Lewis Forde.

The rebound was met by a rushing Fountain, who slotted the effort under Forde. Forde was in action in place of injured regular custodian Ryan Steward and looked somewhat shaky when called to acton. Stokely Vale increased the pressure for the rest of the match but West Side remained composed, giving their opponents hardly a sight at an equaliser.

With the win West Side Super Starzs jumped to 12 points in the table. Despite the loss, Stokely Vale remain unmoved at the top as Club Sando were stunned by St Francois Nationals 2-1 at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. Club Sando which was second heading into the  match, was unable to capitalise on their position, even with Andy London taking a lead in the 21st minute.

Jesse Alexis responded for St Francois in the 40th minute. The match took another turn late on when the bottom side, which was without a win found their first three points with Marc Borde’s 75th minute goal. WASA was also unable to capitalise on the top two sides’ struggles as it was held 1-1 away to Eagles United at the Woodford Lodge, Chaguanas.

Alvin Beharry opened for WASA in the 23rd minute to lead all the way through to the dying minutes, when Eagles found the equaliser from Micha Andrews. Defence Force, which is no stranger to a draw this season was again held, this time by 1976 Phoenix 1-1 at Caanan, Bon Accord, in similar circumstances.

Sterling O’Brien gave the “armymen” the lead in the 14th minute, one which would hold until halftime. Soon after the start of the second half Phoenix applied pressure and found the leveller from Vario Holmes. The scoreline remained the same, and the result summed up the season thus far for both sides.

Joe Public go second.
T&T Newsday Reports.

BMOBILE JOE Public FC defeated the lowly Real Maracas 1-0 to move into second place in the blink/bmobile National Super League as action continued in match day eight on Wednesday.

Joe Public entered the round, joint third but were keen on closing the gap on leaders Stokely Vale FC who top the standings with 16 points.

Both teams found it difficult to create chances and it was no surprise they went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

The “Eastern Lions” finally roared in the second half with Donovan Derrick finding the back of the net in the 75th minute as they held on for the victory.

The win sees them just one point behind Stokely Vale who were upset 1-0 by mid-table Westside Super Starz FC.

The first half ended goalless but Westside slowly began to believe in themselves and got the go-ahead goal in the 63rd through Brandon Fountain.

Stokely Vale, despite throwing everything they could at their opponents, could not find a goal, as they suffered their second defeat of the season.

Meanwhile, cellar-placed St Francois Nationals won their first game of the season, defeating Club Sando 2-1 in a shocker that dealt a crucial blow to their title ambitions.

A win would have seen Club Sando go joint top but instead St Francois got three points from a game for the first time this season although it did nothing to change their position in the standings.

Club Sando, unsurprisingly, took the lead in the 21st through Andy London but St Francois’ Jesse Alexis struck just five minutes before the interval to send his team into the half on par with their opponents.

St Francois then completed the comeback in the 75th with Marc Borde bagging the winner.
