ST BENEDICTS College continued their strong run of form in the 2014 BGTT Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division yesterday by crushing fellow southerners Naparima College 3-0 at home in the Commons, La Romain.

The “Golden Lions” capitalised on their home advantage early on and went ahead with a good strike from Levi Crawford in the 29th minute. Naparima did not make most of their rare chances are were duly punished for their discrepancies by a determined St Benedict’s outfit in the second period of play.

At the resumption, the leaders stretched their goal margin even further when Matthew Joseph wittily lobbed “Naps” custodian Darriel Kurjah from approximately 25 yards out. St Benedict’s would affirm the victory over their southern rivals as Anthony Herbert capped things off with a good finish in the 69th minute. The victors now stand in the top five on 10 points while Naparima remain on nine.

In the post match review by Naparima coach, Angus Eve, he revealed that their opponents played with more passion.

“St Benedict’s wanted the game more than us,” said Eve, who further referenced yesterday’s loss with last week’s failure to get past St Mary’s. “We have a lot of ability but the fight was lacking today. We didn’t attack, defend and shoot the ball as we should and that made the difference on the day.”

In other matches yesterday, defending champions St Anthony’s College held off a late charge from Shiva Boys’ to grasp a nail-biting 3-2 win at home. This victory for the “Tigers” sees them remain at the top of the league standings on 15 points while Shiva Boys’ sit six points behind.

Meanwhile, Fatima College also weaned out a fighting 1-1 result against bottom-of-the-table East Mucurapo. Yesterday’s draw saw the latter team gain their first point of the 2014 season.

St Mary’s College was also forced to settle for a drawn result (1-1) as they were held at bay by a persistent Trinity East unit.

Presentation San Fernando eased past Chaguanas North 3-0, Carapichaima East pipped San Juan North 2-1 and Arima North blanked St Augustine 2-0.
