'San Juan Kings' suffer second consecutive league defeat; Cale' jumps second
Hasely Crawford Stadium, PORT OF SPAIN—Play Whe San Juan Jabloteh, fresh from their 2014 Toyota Classic crowning on Friday night, fell to a 4-1 defeat against neighbouring rivals Caledonia AIA on Tuesday in Round One Match Day Seven of the 2014-2015 Digicel Pro League (DPL).
It was the second consecutive DPL loss for the Keith Jeffrey-coached Jabloteh, which suffered a 4-0 defeat against Central FC a week ago at the same venue before landing the club's first title in six years, last Friday, with a 4-2 penalty win over Point Fortin Civic after a 1-1 draw.
Jabloteh were pulled back down to reality twice in the first half after Caledonia's Nathan Lewis and Kareem Joseph found the back of the net in the 20th and 26th minutes respectively for a 2-0 score.
Jabloteh's troubles worsen in the second half as Caledonia moved two places up the DPL standings into second with 11 points—one point ahead of defending champions DIRECTV W Connection (10 points) and two points shy of leaders Central FC (13 points).
Caledonia attacker Pernell Schultz defeated goalkeeper Shane Mattis from the penalty spot in the 56th minute to make it 3-0 after he was brought in the box by Garth Thomas.
And in the 59th minute Jabloteh defender Dario Holmes' back pass defeated his own goalie in favour of Caledonia—celebrating a 4-0 lead—with an own goal.
Jabloteh finally pulled a goal back in the 64th minute through substitute forward Johan Peltier, following an excellent build-up, however it only amounted to a consolation item in the 4-1 result.
In the second match of the double header, Point Fortin Civic visited Defence Force at the Port of Spain venue and took away one point in a 1-1 draw.
Defence Force midfielder Jerwyn Balthazar and forward Richard Roy were both denied by the frame in the 28th and 34th minutes respectively before Roy directed in Jemel Sebro's right side cross past goalkeeper Marvin Phillip for a 1-0 advantage seconds into the second period.
Civic, in search of the equalising item, saw defender Kevin Rouse head wide of an open net in the 51st minute and defender Weslie John denied in the 80th minute by an excellent Sheldon Clarke save.
But in the 81st minute Civic got the levelling item courtesy an own goal when Defence Force defender Glynn Franklyn's attempt to clear a dangerous cross, only sliced the ball into his own net for the 1-1 score.
Sharing the spoils, Defence Force, now tied with 7 points along with North East Stars, remains seventh, while Civic, now with 5 points, continues to occupy eight position ahead of bottom of the table St. Ann's Rangers (1 point).
On Thursday, Round One Match Day Seven continues with third positioned W Connection against fourth positioned Police from 6 pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium, followed by North East Stars, sixth on the standings, against top of the table Central FC from 8 pm, closing off the year for the Christmas break. The DPL will resume on January 9.
