Super League outfit WASA FC had their fun but their giant-killing run came to an emphatic end yesterday evening at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya as they found themselves on the wrong end of a 8-1 clobbering from T&T Pro League runners-up, W. Connection.
It was a tame end for the "Water Boys" who dreamed of emulating their 2006 success when they beat North East Stars 4-2 on penalty kicks to secure the country's oldest prize.
They did repeat their FA conquest of Stars on December 7 when they again defeated the Pro League outfit on penalties-although, on this occasion, at the quarter-final stage. But Connection were an entirely different proposition.
It hardly helped when they offered Connection a head start. An errant clearance by WASA custodian and captain Douglas McNeilly landed at the feet of Brazilian midfielder Igor Santos-one of four South American players in the Connection starting line-up-who delicately dispatched into the far corner with the outside of his right boot in the second minute.
Three minutes later, striker Teba McKnight sidefooted home from a Kern Cupid cross and Connection got a third after 15 minutes as George Isaac ran on to a clever Ronaldo Viana through pass and stroked the ball past McNeilly.
Connection's Kareem Smith got their fourth, seconds after the restart, and there were only personal milestones to be attained thereafter.
McKnight scored twice again for his hat-trick while Isaac and Clyde Leon also got second half items.
Almost every finish was a copy of the one that went before as Connection passed through a malfunctioning WASA offside trap and around an unprotected McNeilly for a teammate to tap into an empty net.
WASA substitute Mervyn Brooks managed a consolation item in the 66th minute as he prodded home from a Kevin Daniel cross but they were already buried by then.
For Connection, a fourth FA Trophy crown could be on the cards when they face either Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA or Defence Force at the same venue tomorrow evening.
Caledonia and Defence Force were contesting the other semi-final after press time last night.
