30-Mar-2005 - Real Salt Lake defender Marlon Rojas is carded to line up for his
club against NY/NJ MetroStars on the weekend. But he’s more interested in
playing today against Costa Rica.
Rojas was a starter in the 2-1 loss to United States last month but was on the
bench on Saturday and is keen to get back among the starters having recovered
from a hamstring injury.
“I am one hundred percent ready again. The coach is the one who decides
whether I play or not and when I’m called I’ll be ready,” Rojas said.
“We are accustomed to these situations and it’s a matter of us being able to
rebound against Costa Rica. Deep down I believe the guys all want to get it
right in this one.”

11-Mar-2005 - Because Portugal did not want him, Real Salt Lake's newest defender, Marlon Rojas, decided to settle for Salt Lake City.
Rojas, the team's recent 25-year-old acquisition and a regular on the Trinidad and Tobago national team, intended to join Real during the team's practice sessions in Monte Gordo, Portugal, last week. But as it turned out, his visa was good enough for about every other country in the world except Portugal.
"It has been on my mind," Rojas said. "The guys have an edge on me, training the past couple of weeks."
Rojas first arrived in Utah on Friday evening, and Saturday was at the team's three-on-three youth soccer event. His first impressions of Utah, mixed with the action at the University of Utah's indoor football practice facility, were positive.
"It's going to be great; the people here seem really interested in what we are going to do here," Rojas said.
While the rest of the team practices in Portugal, Rojas will bide his time in Utah looking for a house and otherwise getting settled. He also is resting a hamstring he pulled recently in a game against Jamaica. He is looking forward to when Real returns to the United States for its practice sessions in Redlands, Calif.
His training with Real may be short-lived, however. Chances are, he will be recalled to Trinidad for national team training.

02-Mar-2005 - Real Salt Lake finalized their long-anticipated acquisition of
Trinidad & Tobago defender Marlon Rojas on Tuesday, further adding to their
line-up of talented internationals. Rojas is slated to join his new teammates in
Monte Gordo, Portugal, on Wednesday.
Rojas normally plays as a left back but he can also be used in an attacking
role, either on the left or centrally. Thus far in the 2006 World Cup qualifying
cycle, Rojas has served the Soca Warriors from the back line, using his pace and
crossing ability to help T&T advance to the final round of CONCACAF
qualifying.
"Marlon Rojas is a very experienced international player and I was able to
see him play recently against the U.S. national team in round two of World Cup
qualifying in Trinidad & Tobago," said RSL head coach John Ellinger.
"As a coaching staff, we are excited for him to join the team and expect
him to fill the opening left by Pablo Brenes, who was recently traded."
The 25-year-old has started seven of his country's nine matches since the start
of qualifying, missing two full matches -- against Mexico and St. Vincent and
the Grenadines -- and part of a third due to an ankle injury. Rojas played a
full 90 minutes on Feb. 9 against the United States, picking up a yellow card
but not making a real difference as the Soca Warriors fell 2-1 to the USA.
If Ellinger uses Rojas as Brenes was used last season by Bob Bradley with the
MetroStars, he would likely play on the left side of the midfield, where he
would add to an already potent attack that includes Jamaican international
midfielder Andy Williams, U.S. international striker Clint Mathis and the
league's all-time leading scorer, striker Jason Kreis. If Ellinger instead uses
Rojas as T&T national team manager Bertille St. Clair uses him, he would
complete a very talented starting defensive unit.
Veteran U.S. international Eddie Pope serves as the anchor of Ellinger's back
line, and Brian Dunseth, another recent arrival to the Wasatch Front, is likely
to be Pope's partner in the middle. Rojas seems to be a good candidate to fill
the left back spot, but with Evan Whitfield, Matt Behncke, Nelson Akwari and
Rusty Pierce all in the mix, Ellinger may choose to liven up his midfield with
Rojas' tenacity.
Prior to joining RSL, Rojas spent his entire professional career in his home
country, having spent time with Superstar Rangers, Police FC and Joe Public,
with whom he won the T&T Super League title in 2004. Rojas played college
soccer at both St. John's University and the University of Tampa, winning the
Division II national title at the latter in 2001. He spent time with D.C. United
in 2003, but departed prior to the start of the regular season. Rojas is the
fifth international to join RSL in advance of its inaugural campaign. Pope,
Mathis, Williams and Zimbabwean forward Dipsy Selolwane are the others.

02-Jan-2005 - Defender Marlon Rojas has signed a one-year deal with new American
MLS side Real Salt Lake. The 25-year-old former Tampa University graduate was
snapped up by Salt Lake coach John Ellinger, who remembered him from his College
days up to 2001.
“The coach knew me since back then and he’s always indicated an interest in
me and now having gotten this position as coach, I got the chance to sign,”
said the ex-Joe Public player.
“I think I’m in really good shape now. I’m feeling just as good if not
better than when I was at Tampa and during my stint with DC United.
“My confidence has grown and this is the reason for my form at the moment.
“I’m not getting too confident though, because it’s important that I keep
this up and deliver on the field when it really matters,” added the former
Police and Superstar Rangers player who hails from Arima. Rojas was selected on
the American NCAA All Star team in 2001 when he helped Tampa to the Division II
title.

29-Jan-2005 - Marlon Rojas will now join the list of
overseas pros as he signed a contract with new American MLS side Real Salt Lake
on Wednesday. Having been snapped up by coach John Ellinger, Real general
manager Steve Pastorino announced Thursday that Rojas has signed and the chances
are that he will be on the field when the team kicks off for the first time
against the NY/NJ MetroStars on April 2.
"Rojas is another example of the network that John has among other
coaches," Pastorino said. "He is a player that has been overlooked by
the other MLS teams." At a media roundtable
Thursday, the team unveiled a list of the probable starters for the opener at
the Meadowlands. Rojas, was listed as a left-side defender, and will start in
the back next to Matt Behncke, Brian Dunseth and Rusty Pierce. Among Rojas’
team-mates at Real will be United
States forward Clint Mathis and Jason Kreis, as well as Jamaican midfielder Andy
Williams.
