The creation of a distinctive new armband for the captain of the Soca Warriors team was conceptualised as a means of branding Trinidad and Tobago through sports. It is hoped that this exercise will create an awareness that the recognition that is received by sportspersons nationally and internationally, may be used by them for the creation of distinctive brands that the sportspersons may sell or licence for monetary reward.
These brands should be registered as trademarks at the Intellectual Property Office of the Ministry of Legal Affairs and it grants the trademark owner exclusive rights to the use of the trademark. Based on the grant of the exclusive rights, the trademark owner may then license the trade mark on official products of the sportsperson or even sell the trademark to another entity, all at a cost and this has proven to be a very lucrative business arrangement the world over.
