Veteran goalkeeper Clayton Ince is keeping his options open that he will earn a recall to the Trinidad and Tobago football team in the near future.

In a recent interview, the 38-year-old Ince stated, “I haven’t retired from playing for the national team, I retired from English football. Everybody should know that.

“I’m not playing in England again,” he added, “I’m open to playing football for my country at any time.”

Ince, who has played 79 times for Trinidad and Tobago from 1997-2009, is realistic enough to know that coach Russell Latapy has shown a preference to the trio of Jan-Michael Williams (W Connection), Marvin Phillip (Joe Public) and Kevin Graham (Defence Force).

“I give the coach his opportunity and I’m still active (and) playing,” said Ince. “And if he thinks it’s needed for me to come around to help or in some part of the team play, he would give me a call. But it’s good to see that the younger ones there.

“I’ve been there before and to get someone older to come back and play, sometimes it puts a damper on you. So giving the youngsters the opportunity, as his first (choice), he’s right to do that,” added the ex-Defence Force, Crewe Alexandra, Dundee FC, Coventry City and Walsall goalie.

Asked what role he will like to take in the Trinidad and Tobago team, Ince responded, “he (Latapy) invited me to come and train with the team. Sometimes I go and train with them, just to get my fitness.

The ex-national Under-20 World Cup goalie continued, “so it’s up to him to make his decision whether or not he’ll include me in his system or if he wants me there to inspire the younger ones.”

How would he rate his fitness level thus far? “My fitness is about 75-80 percent,” he answered. “I’m just keeping fit, I’m very active still. I play games, I’m still involved in goalkeeping literally and when I’m needed or when the time (is) called I’ll be there.”

Ince recently joined Pro League club Ma Pau and noted, “I went to play a couple exhibition games and it’s not the competitive heights but we’ve been on a lull in the league so it’s not really much competitive games.

“So I’m still active and I’ve had a couple 90 minutes under my belt,” he ended.
