Seventeen year-old midfielder Jomal Williams has earned himself a call-up with the Trinidad and Tobago U23 training squad in preparations for the November 26-28 final phase of Caribbean qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Jomal already making a name for himself with the W Connection senior team this season, joined club teammates Joevin Jones, Akeem Benjamin, Kenaz Williams, Jerrel Britto, Shahdon Winchester and goalkeeper Andre Marchan with the T&T U-23s which resumed training on Friday under head coach Angus Eve and assistant coaches Derek King and Clint Marcelle.
Mikeil Williams of W Connection and T&TEC’s Akeem Adams also named in the training squad are currently with the T&T Senior Team for World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Barbados.
Cuba, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and St Kitts and Nevis will battle on for two Caribbean spots into the CONCACAF Final Round qualifiers in the United States in March 2012.
The Caribbean qualifiers will join Canada, Mexico and the United States and three Central American qualifiers who will battle for two Olympic spots.
Although it puts a dent in W Connection training programme, having eight of its senior team players with the T&T U-23 team, the ‘Savonetta Boys’ head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier expressed satisfaction in supporting Trinidad and Tobago at National level.
“I will not prevent the players from playing on the national team,” he said.
“I will just have to cope with it. I always encourage my players to be ambitious and try to play for their country. Although it sometimes affects our programme, I never try and prevent them because it must be a player’s dream.
We see it as our duty. We have always supported the National programme and the national teams must support the clubs as well.”
Other players selected in the Olympic Team training squad includes Caledonia AIA’s Jamal Gay, Trevin Caesar, Aquil Selby, Micah Lewis and Zane Coker, T&TEC FC’s Marcus Joseph and Aubrey David, San Juan Jabloteh’s Sheldon Bateau and Leslie Joel Russell, St. Ann’s Rangers’ Kareem Moses and Jevon Morris, Police FC’s Adrian Noel and Jayson Joseph, St. Anthony's College’s Dwight Ceballo, North East Stars’ Jeromie Williams and Kaydion Gabriel, Carenage United’s Darryl Mark, Defence Force’s Curtis Gonzales and Joe Public’s Kelon Mitchell.
