Boys Town picked up a much-needed 1-0 victory on Sunday in a scrappy performance against Dragon FC in the Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond Football League.

Languishing in the lower half of the standings without a win, Boys Town were desperate and came out hungry for goals. They should have went ahead early in the first half when midfielder Isiah Smith was neatly slipped through on goal with a cushioned pass but goalie Marlon Bones raced off his line to pull off a superb save. The early pressure was paying off and Sean Reyes could have fired Boys Town ahead when a free-kick from the left somehow made its way to him on the right but the burly forward volleyed well over the bar.

Dragon FC began to find their rhythm though and had a couple chances to test Roger Allen in the Boys Town goal but could not keep their shots on target. Boys Town, after their early tempo failed to produce a goal, began to lose patience and sloppiness in their defence allowed Dragon striker John Belgrave to steal the ball from the last defender but with Allen alone to beat he struck the ball straight into his grateful arms to the dismay of his teammates.

Belgrave was proving quite a handful with his size and skill but his shooting left much to be desired as the half ended 0-0.

Boys Town, unable to string together passes consistently for much of the first period, decided to change things up with forward Brenty Johnson replaced. And the substitution immediately worked with just two passes needed to score the opening goal. A long throw to half-line from their goalkeeper found Rondell Vincent who cut inside before finding a charging Smith on a diagonal run down the left and before he could be closed down, Smith spanked a right-footer with the outside of his right foot that fizzed and swerved through the arms of the Dragon goalie and into the net.

Dragon almost responded immediately but Allen was solid and assured in goal. Belgrave was terrorising Boys Town’s defenders, and slalomed his way through five defenders before letting loose with a left-footer which Allen saved low to his left. Dragon had one final chance to find an equaliser, when Belgrave was picked out on top the box after a surging run down the right flank by Anthony Applewhite but his radar was off. The final whistle saw Boys Town breathe a sigh of relief but they will need to play much better to continue their climb in the standings.
