A double strike by "bound-to-score" striker Carlon Hughes propelled frontrunners Mayaro Spurs to a 2-0 victory over fellow contenders Mafeking United last Sunday as action continued in the Senior Division of the 2009 bpTT Mayaro Football League.

Hughes' prolific scoring form has enabled championship favourites Mayaro Spurs to occupy top position in the league standings with 18 points from six wins.

After losing their first match, Spurs have rattled off five consecutive victories, thanks mainly to Hughes' lethal finishing which has notched him 15 goals so far.

Mafeking enjoyed better fortune earlier in the week when they edged Valencia 2-1 on August 11.

Star striker Leroy Jones, who scored a remarkable seven goals in his previous match, and Keron Marcus netted for Mafeking, while Kendes Garcia got the lone item for Valencia. Jones took his goal tally to 20 in seven matches.

St Ann's United moved off the bottom of the table with their first win of the season, beating fellow strugglers Newlands 3-1.

Gary John, Marvin Cornwall and Kelly Hepburn were the heroes for St Ann's, while Joshua Dowridge netted for Newlands, who now occupy last position with a single point.

St Ann's, however, could not sustain their new-found winning form and were brought back to reality four days later when they suffered a 6-0 whipping by Illusion SC.

Double strikes by K Alfred and B Pope, supported by S Edwards and C Garcia, did the trick for Illusion.

Rio Claro United continued their upward climb with a 2-0 victory over Ozone, thanks to a brace from Jamie John. Both teams are in mid-table.

After losing their previous match, Mayaro Boys returned to winning form with a narrow 2-1 win over mid-table Valencia. Stephan Calliste notched a double for the Boys, while Kershawn George replied for Valencia.

Matches in the Mayaro Football League continue this weekend at the Mayaro Recreation Ground.
