Illusion Sports Club are the 2009 champions of the bpTT Mayaro Football League (MFL), after edging Mayaro Spurs 2-1 in the League decider last week at Mayaro Recreation Ground.

Rickey Pope secured the trophy for Illusion with a pair of goals during the top-of-the-table clash, the win pushing his team to an unassailable 28 points.

Prolific striker Carlon Hughes was once again on target for Spurs, but the equaliser eluded them when it mattered most.

Illusion earned their title with an impressive record of nine wins, with a single loss and one draw from their 11 outings.

Spurs, runners-up in the 2008 League to Mandingo United, faltered late in their campaign, losing their last two matches, including a 2-1 beating by Mayguaya United, who are now in the running for a second-spot finish. Mandingo did not compete this year.

Mayguaya and Spurs are both on 24 points, with the former leading on goal difference.

But they can be overtaken by Mayaro Boys, who are on 22 points with a match in hand.

Mayaro Boys, now fourth, will be confident for their final meeting against mid-table side Ozone, after whipping Warriors 4-0 on goals from Ian Edwards, Rocklan Jones, Randell McIntosh and Beville Joseph.

Ozone are seventh out of 12 teams and a positive result could see them jump to sixth.

The draw for the Knock-Out championships in the Senior Division takes place on Friday, while competition begins on October 5.

And Mayaro Composite were crowned Under-17 Knock-Out champions, narrowly edging league champions Mayguaya 4-3 on kicks from the penalty spot.

The teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time.
