A first prize of $10,000 will be up for grabs in the 2009 version of the Super Industrial Services Industrial Football League, which was officially launched on Friday at Point Lisas. The tournament has attracted many companies from the Point Lisas Industrial Estate.
A total of 14 teams will be participating, among them being PCS Nitrogen, Plipdeco, Yara Trinidad Ltd, Super Industrial Services Ltd, Phoenix Park Gas Processors, Caribbean Nitrogen Company (CNC), Trinidad Cement Ltd (TCL), Proman AG, Powergen (Pt Lisas), Industrial Plant Services Limited (Methanol and AUM divisions), National Energy Corporation, National Gas Company of Trinidad & Tobago and T&TEC.
Ainsworth Martinez, a senior member of SIS’s marketing team, made the opening remarks and announced this year’s top prize of $10,000 and the challenge trophy. Ronald Ramlogan, a member of the organising committee, said: “Last year was a huge success.
We envision this year’s competition to be even better. Our goal is to engender a greater community spirit among the companies on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and we are confident that this month-long tournament will go a long way in achieving this.
“We expect keen competition with some good matches and no matter who emerges as the champion, the relationships and camaraderie that we develop is what’s important at the end of it all,” added Ramlogan.
The opening game between defending champion Super Industrial Services Limited and PCS Nitrogen ended in a 1-1 draw. The game between Plipdeco and TCL was fast paced and entertaining.
Both teams seemed to be evenly matched with Plipdeco enjoying the better of the exchanges and the majority of the possession. Even though it created several chances throughout the match, it could not put one past the TCL custodian.
TCL’s defence should be credited with a solid performance. The game ended in a 0–0 draw. The days other match between Phoenix Park and Yara, saw Phoenix Park coming away with three points by way of a forfeit.
