San Fernando Sports Academy partnered with the Jan Steadman Soccer School and hosted their first youth tournament for 2011 entitled “Future Football Stars”, at Skinner Park, San Fernando, on February 12.

The tournament featured 12 matches within the categories of Under-6, Under-8, Under-10 and Under-13, as these eager youths all competed for parent-sponsored trophies and medals.

Joshua Hospedales of San Fernando Sports Academy earned the “Most Valuable Player” award after he scored a hat-trick in the Under-8 division against a Jan Steadman squad.

The club has currently directed their training toward the development of an U-12 squad who will participate in the Disneyland Football tournament in August. The youths are using these local tournaments to enhance their skill and themselves as better footballers.

Founder and technical director of San Fernando Sports Academy Preston Nanan, insisted that both football schools are the biggest youth clubs in San Fernando, and have directed their focus toward young footballers in South Trinidad.

His club aims to develop and nurture young skill with the direct goal of planting successful players within primary and secondary schools.

Their long term objective is to develop quality players that will meet the skill credentials to attain a position on national teams.

The Sports Academy runs their development programme for interested youths from age four.

Kids are coached by willing parents and interested members, who volunteer their services toward the further development.

Next event on the club’s itinerary is the San Fernando Football Fiesta which comprises of 25 teams from various football clubs across Trinidad and Tobago.

This competition is considered to be the largest children’s football tournament in San Fernando and will take place at Skinner Park, San Fernando on May 7, from 8.30 am to 2 pm.
