JOE PUBLIC stretched their lead in the bmobile National Super League to 11 points as they crushed WASA 5-1 in Sunday’s Match Day 12 contest at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna.

The hosts had to wait until the stroke of half-time to get the scoreboard going, courtesy an item from Dion Peters, before Darren Lewis levelled the scores in the 69th.

But the “Eastern Lions” went into overdrive, as Anthony Thompson restored Joe Public’s lead in the 74th, while Dorion Robinson widened the margin in the 77th.

WASA’s misery was compounded as Thompson went on to register a hat-trick, with strikes in the 87th and 90th minutes, as Joe Public secured their 10th victory in 12 matches.

The most lop-sided result on the day was at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima, as Queen’s Park annihilated table-proppers East/West Coaching School 6-1.

Vladimir Henderson-Suite (fifth) and Devon Alleyne (15th) put the Parkites 2-0 ahead while forward Jason Charles got his name on the score-sheet in the 34th, collecting a through ball from Lorne Joseph and placing his right-footer beyond the advancing goalkeeper Garvin Stuart.

Keston Alexander pulled one back for East/West, collecting a quickly-taken freekick from his captain Adrian Nunez, two minutes into the second half, and driving his left-footer beyond Tristan Charles in the Queen’s Park goal.

The game went into a prolong lull until Jason Charles resumed the scoring courtesy of an 81st minute penalty, after Joseph was up-ended by defender Marvin Straker.

Joseph had a hand in Queen’s Park fifth goal, in the 86th, as he led a breakaway which saw Stuart leave his net in vain as the midfielder, on the right, squared the ball to Alleyne who drilled home from five metres out.

And, in stoppage time, the Parkites saved the best for last as they completed an exhibition of passing with substitute Nasyir Rodriguez, at the edge of the penalty box, got a ball from fellow substitute Luke Camacho, turned and drove home his right-footer, to the right of the hapless goalie.

Joe Public’s task on Sunday was made much easier as second-placed Harvard and third-placed 1976 FC Phoenix both lost their respective encounters.

Anton Elliott scored twice as Carenage United edged Harvard 2-1 at the Youth Camp in Chaguaramas.

Elliott broke the deadlock after six minutes before veteran striker Christon Freitas equalised in the 39th, but Elliott notched the winner five minutes from full-time.

Phoenix got a 4-2 spanking from the visiting TTEC at Canaan, Bon Accord, with Dezi Lara (22nd), Tigana Sparks (28th), Jamal Ayres (40th) and Sylvester Teesdale (88th) getting their names on the score-sheet for the improving TTEC while Andel Noray (27th) and Shelton Williams (68th) replying for Phoenix.

Economy Strikers’ downward spiral continued when they allowed Club Sando to respond from a half-time deficit to prevail 2-1 at the Palo Seco Recreation Ground.

Quaci Johnson put Economy ahead in the 32nd but Al Sinclair tied the scores in the 65th and, 12 minutes later, Keith Williams found the back of the net to complete the turn-around for the Sando lads.

St Francois Nationals did even worse against hosts Defence Force, at the Army base in Chaguaramas, as they could not hold on to a 3-1 lead and fell 4-3 to the “Teteron lads”.

Steve Benny gave the Defence Force a third minute lead before St Francois responded with a trio of goals, from Keron Edwards (13th), Gabriel St John (18th) and Marc Borde (21st).

The fortunes of both teams changed dramatically in the second half, as striker Bevon Lewis notched a double (48th and 58th) to even up the scores at 3-3 while evergreen forward Sherman “Ants” Phillips got the game-winner in the 80th. Action on Match Day 13 will be contested on July 26.
