Carenage Boys Government made a good start to their Atlantic LNG Primary Schools Football League knockout title defence with a 4-0 thumping of VOS Government yesterday at Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

Carenage had a pair of goals on either side of half-time, Travell Edwards and Nikiean Aaron scoring for a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break. Jomokie Cassimy and Aaron added a strike each in the second period as Carenage cruised home.

Newtown Boys RC, who finished runners-up to Carenage in the Port of Spain Division, had a tougher match, but prevailed 2-1 against Gasparillo Government, also at the Marabella venue. A Cheyen Stephen second-half double secured Newtown’s quarter-final spot, despite a spirited challenge by Gasparillo.

Valencia South also had a slim 2-1 victory over Santa Cruz RC at Arima Velodrome, before Monte Grande pushed past Guayaguayare Boys RC by an identical scoreline.

At St Mary’s Ground in Carapichaima, Arima Boys RC hammered La Brea RC 6-1, with a double by John Paul Rochford and items by Shirlo Johnson, Kaheem Lee, Isiah Lee and Renaldo Francois. Akimolo Gregory had the consolation goal for La Brea.

Carapichaima suffered a similar fate, blanked 5-0 by Santa Flora, Levi and Judah Garcia both doubling up and David Jones adding the fifth.

Today, Tobago champions Bon Accord meet New Grant at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago from 11 a.m., while Tobago runners-up Bethesda play Chaguanas RC from 10 a.m. at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

The Girls competition kicks off today, with champs Carapichaima on a bye, waiting for the winner of today’s VOS/Patna River Estate encounter at Manny Ramjohn Stadium, also at 10 a.m., in the first match of a triple-header.

Also at that venue, La Horquetta North and Cedros do battle from 10.40 a.m., while Claxton Bay Anglican play St Agnes Anglican from 11.30.

At Ato Boldon Stadium, St David’s RC and Roxborough Anglican face off from 10 a.m., before Manzanilla and Barataria Anglican clash at 11 a.m. And Tobago Montgomery come up against Valencia South from 10 a.m. at the Bacolet venue.

Carenage Boys’ Government made a successful start to its 2009 campaign in the Atlantic LNG Primary Schools Football League knockout finals, which began yesterday at three venues in T&T. Carenage, the champion team for the past two years, began its title defence with an easy 4-0 win over Vos Government at Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.

The Port-of-Spain champion approached the halftime interval with a two-goal cushion following goals by Travell Edwards and Nikiean Aaron. In the second period, it extended the lead through Jomokie Cassimy before Aaron added his second for the comfortable victory.

Also at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, an indisciplined Newtown Boys’ RC edged a plucky Gasparillo Government 2-1 to move into the quarterfinals with a second-half double from Cheyen Stephen. At the Arima Velodrome, Valencia South edged Santa Cruz RC 2 -1.

In the final game of the double header, Monte Grande got the better of Guayaguayare Boys’ RC, also by a 2-1 margin. Down on St Mary’s Ground in Carapichiama, Arima Boy’s RC served notice to all comers that it is ready to reclaim the crown with an impressive 6-1 victory over La Brea RC.

Shirlo Johnson, Kahaeem Lee, Isaiah Lee, John Paul Rochford and Renaldo Francois were the marksmen for Arima Boys’ in the first half while Akimolo Gregory scored for La Brea Rc to make the score 5-1 before the half time whistle.

After the interval, Rochford added his second to give the former champion and easy success. Earlier, Santa Flora beat Carapichaima RC 5-0.

Levi Garcia gave Santa Flora a two goal lead in the first half while Judah Garcia added his double in the second half with David Jones putting the icing on the cake with his goal in the 50th minute.
