Defending champion, Carenage Boys’ Government Primary School faces a tough hurdle today in the semifinals of the Boys Division of the 2008 Atlantic LNG National Primary Schools Football League which kick off at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, from 10 am.

Carenage, which had a relatively comfortable passage to the Big-Four semifinals, will meet a quietly confident La Horquetta North Government for a place in the grand finale.

La Horquetta put up impressive performances in its last two matches and will be no pushover, as it seeks its first primary schools football title.

The other semifinal in the Boy’s Division should also be an even match-up between Arima Boys RC and San Fernando Boys RC, who have both demonstrated themselves as worthy contenders for championship honours.

The semifinals have been switched to Ato Boldon Stadium to facilitate the teams in both Boys and Girls Divisions which come from different parts of Trinidad.

In the Girls Division, a mouth-watering encounter is in store in the first semifinal as defending champion, Patna River Estate Government come up against overwhelming favourites Carapichaima RC.

Patna River Estate advanced to the semis with the lucky toss of a coin and on sudden penalty kicks in the Round of 16 and the quarter-finals.

In contrast, Carapichaima has played compelling football, winning its quarterfinal match 9-0, with strike partners Rhonique Alexander and Zoe Swift in irrepressible form.

In the other semifinal, Palo Seco Government, which won its quarterfinal on sudden death penalty kicks, will face fellow southerners, Egypt Village Government, which was on a bye.

President of the National Primary Schools Football League, Vincent Graham, appealed to supporters of the competing schools and football lovers in general to come to the Ato Boldon Stadium to spur on the young stars. “We need the support of the public to encourage our budding stars to perform to the best of their talents. The standard of play is very good and it will be a treat for all,” said Graham.
