Siparia East Secondary School were crowned champions of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Under-15 Girls South Zone division on Thursday.

They collected their final three points via default to seal the title, after Barrackpore Secondary failed to show up on Thursday for their last league match.

At the end of the league, Siparia East were unbeaten in the South Zone on 13 points. They won four games and drew one.

Their journey to the Under-15 Girls title in South saw them defeat San Fernando East (2-0), San Fernando Central (1-0), Point Fortin East (2-0), Barrackpore Secondary (default) and draw with Fyzabad Anglican (1-1).

Shantel Batson is the top scorer for the squad with seven goals in four games.

Coach of the team, Iverne Yearwood was pleased to see the team advance to the Big Five Round of competition for the first time in the school’s history.

He was elated with the South Zone victory and revealed that this was only their second year in the Under-15 Girls tournament. Yearwood wants the team to go on and win the Under-15 title.

He explained, “We are hoping to win our opening match of the National Play-offs. This will do a lot for us as a school and a budding team.

Our first match will see us going up against the winners of the East Zone. We’re not even sure who won in the East, so it’s an unknown entity we’ll have to face. We want to build up a good team so that we can stay in the league in the coming years.”

Yearwood admitted that the school is working on re-establishing their Boys Under-19 team. They played in the SSFL for the past three years but did not qualify for the 2011/ 2012 competition. He saw this venture as a goal that should be achieved within the next two years.

Siparia East Under-15 Girls team are carded to begin their Big Five campaign against winners of the East Zone on November 15.
