Goddard out of luck; Time to call pro-life a day?

Official Site of Richard Goddard.
20-Apr-2006 - It could have been a story book ending for Richard Goddard but it wasn't meant to be. Goddard could have been back in the city he left home for back in 1997, to attend Roberts Wesleyan College, earn his B.S. in Business Administration and essentially began his pro-soccer career. Unfortunately the Rochester Rhinos coaching staff had other ideas, and with the Seattle Sounders out of the running now, it seems this could be the end of the pro-soccer career of Richard Goddard. "You would love to end it on your own terms but more times than not, it doesn't work out that way," Goddard said recently in an interview. "It would have made sense for me partly because my fiancee and son also live in the Rochester area, but the coaching staff of the Rhinos have a job to do and they decided to look elsewhere. It's part of the pro-game." With this blow coming so close to the beginning of the USL Division 1 season, Goddard may be left no other choice but to hang up the boots. "I'll still train and keep myself fit and ready if called upon. We'll see what direction life takes me over the next few months."

26-Oct-2002 - Technical Director Hannibal Najjar saw this country’s Senior Women team off on Friday morning as they headed for California to contest the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup.
Najjar met the members of the team and technical staff including Coach Jamaal Shabaaz as they departed the Piarco International Airport.
Najjar also spoke with Lincoln Phillips on Friday evening via telephone from the TTFF Offices. Both had a lengthy discussion on plans for the future regarding Phillip’s role here. Phillips was appointed on the coaching development committee and head of the TTFF’s goalkeeping staff as well as technical advisory committee. Najjar will hold his first session with the Senior Team at St Mary’s College ground on Saturday from 10 am. Najjar has expressed interest in a handful of Tobagonians, one being former National Under 17 and current Scaborough Secondary ace Michael Carrington. to training.
Also among the new invitees is Tobago-born former National Under 23 goalkeeper Richard Goddard, who on Friday evening expressed delight and gratitude over his call up to TTFF Media.
Goddard campaigned in the Canadian Professional League last season with Ottawa Wizards and recently completed a season with Charlotte Eagles in the American A-League.
As he prepared to officially beginning his reign, Najjar said “This is a solid time and my feeling s are extremely positive. I’m being honest in saying it’s not a false feeling, its s genuine feeling because it’s a genuine occurrence.
“Have a good look a the committee members. The complexion of our members itself speaks about the direction in which we are heading. It spells positivism. People ask me if I’m mad referring to the size and numbers of the different committees . But this is what we need - We need quality and committed individuals working hand in hand in this ominous venture."

Richard Goddard hopes to save Charlotte.

30-Aug-2002 - Richard Goddard has a 9-13-4 record with a 1.61 goals-against average for the Charlotte Eagles.
Charlotte Eagles midfielder Andy Guastaferro remembers his first impression of Richard Goddard during preseason workouts.
"We were doing wind sprints and he nearly blew everybody away," recalls Guastaferro, the Canan-daigua native. "We couldn't believe it. You don't usually see that out of a goalie."
And since then Goddard hasn't stopped impressing his teammates.
The 24-year-old, who led Roberts Wesleyan College in 1998 to its first NAIA national tournament appearance in 19 years, has become one of the A-League's top goalies in just his rookie season.
The native of Calder Hill, Tobago, Goddard leads the Eagles into tonight's key matchup against the Rhinos at Frontier Field.
How crucial is it?
Charlotte has to win to have any shot at overtaking Toronto for the sixth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot. Rochester, meanwhile, needs a victory to move closer to clinching the Northeast Division title, No. 2 seed and first-round bye that comes with it. They were still tied (68 points) with Montreal after the Impact's 3-0 loss at Portland.
"We recognize that we have a chance here and we're going to try our hardest," says Goddard, who has a 9-13-4 record with a 1.61 goals-against average.
"This is what you play for," Guastaferro says. "It doesn't get any bigger than this."
Last weekend, Charlotte won 4-2 at Richmond then 1-0 at home over the Kickers. It was only Goddard's third shutout, but he has faced 374 shots (44 goals allowed). By comparison, Rhinos keepers have seen 251 shots (22 GA).
"He's fearless. He comes off his line very, very strong," Eagles coach Mark Steffens says of Goddard, a former member of Trinidad & Tobago's Under-23 national team. "He's smart, too. He positions himself very well."
When Goddard was at Roberts, the Rhinos used the college in Chili as their training site. He trained with the team several times.
"I think he has a lot of talent and he's so enthusiastic about goalkeeping," says veteran Rhinos defender Craig Demmin, a native of Trinidad. "He works hard at it and that's so important."
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Goddard credits his time at the St. Cair Coaching School back home for his work ethic. That's where he learned from Bertille St. Clair, the former T&T national team coach. It's also how he wound up at Roberts.
Roberts coach Greg Gidman spoke with St. Clair about another goalie who was considering a transfer to Roberts. St. Clair said he didn't know about that keeper, but knew Goddard had the goods. Goddard started Roberts' pipeline from T&T. Since then, several players from those countries have played there, including Charlotte defender Roger Groome.
"He demanded a certain amount of respect immediately," Gidman says. "He's not a huge guy, but he has a big presence and he brought a lot of experience to our team."
Goddard is the keeper of all the goalie records at Roberts. He was the Region 9 Player of the Year as a senior and a first-team National Christian College Association All-American.
"The first thing I was told before I came to Rochester was that it would be cold," Goddard says with a laugh.
He laughs even harder when asked about his one-year internship with the Rochester Americans. An Amerks game was the first hockey game he ever saw. He'd rather stop shots in soccer than hockey.
"Those pucks come flying at you. At least the soccer ball has some give to it," says Goddard, who rooms with teammate Dwyane Demmin, Craig's younger brother.
Goddard spent last season with Ottawa of the Canadian Professional Soccer League and helped the team win a championship. A free agent after this season, Goddard says he would love to play for the Rhinos. But his status as a foreign player is a detriment, coach Pat Ercoli said. Rochester also has a veteran duo in Pat Onstad and Billy Andracki, who the Rhinos believe will be around for a couple more years.
Goddard's biggest goal, however, is playing for his national team.
"I love representing my country against the best players in the world," he says. "That kind of drives me."
