ST AUGUSTINE moved one match closer to claiming the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Girls East Zone title with a 3-0 win over Toco at the St Augustine Ground yesterday.

The “Green Machine” girls who are showing up the boys this season increased their unbeaten run with six wins in as many matches and have not conceded a goal. They were led by a double from Laurelle Theodore.

After coming away with a hard fought 2-0 win in the first round, “Gustine” would have felt they were going to march all over their opponents, however, they were given a fight especially in the first. They had a goal disallowed and missed a couple of chances but credit must go to the visitors for their efforts as the teams finished the half scoreless.

The St Augustine girls came out in the second half with more purpose and it paid dividends as forward Chelsea Gibbs broke the deadlock to put her team up 1-0. Theodore got into the action as she found the back of the net twice to seal the 3-0 win.

St Augustine coach Desiree Sargeant said in the first half her girls were a bit lacklustre. “We had to change some things during the break and we went out there a little more determined than the way they left the field in the first half.

They did not understand the magnitude of the game in the first half, but they were able to settle down in the second and play the way we know they could play.”

The coach also complimented Toco for their performance despite the loss. “Toco are a very physical team in terms of their energy; they have runners among them so they are very athletic.”
