St Augustine made it back-to-back Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Girls’ Big-Four titles, yesterday, when the “Green Machine” triumphed 2-0 over Scarborough Secondary, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port-of-Spain.
An own goal in the dying moments of the first half spurred on the tenacious girls in green, who then went on to seal the win with a second goal, scored by Anna Williams in the 75th minute.
It was a fitting result for St Augustine, which recently ended their East Zone campaign with wins from as many matches, scoring 27 goals along the way while conceding only two. Just over a week ago, St Augustine yet again made a case for champions’ status when it defeated Point Fortin East, 4-1, in the Big-Four semi-final.
Point Fortin was off to an almost equally impressive league campaign, which included seven wins from eight matches with a goal tally of 55 for and one against.
Scarborough, too, was no walkover, as the Tobago Zone winner defeated North Zone’s Bishop’s Anstey, 3-1, in the other Big-Four semi-final.
That, after winning all their league fixtures. In the second match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Trinity College (North Zone) got the edge over Princes Town West by virtue of a penalty shoot-out after both teams played to a goalless draw at full-time in the Boys’ Big-Eight third-place playoff.
Trinity won the shoot-out 4-3 to gain promotion to next year’s SSFL Premier Division, joining Big-Eight champion Fyzabad Secondary and QRC, the runner-up.
It was a bitter pill to swallow for Princes Town West, which was otherwise outstanding this season. Princes Town West first took the South Zone title by winning seven out of ten league matches, before advancing to the Big-Eight.
The Big-Eight was played with two groups of four, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semi-finals.
Princes Town dominated its group winning all three matches (12 goals for and one against). However, at the semi-final stage, Princes Town was blanked 1-0 by QRC.
