The inaugural KFC Goodwill Schools’ Football Cup kicked off last night at the Ministry of Education (MoE) on Carifesta Avenue with a delayed start but Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T) Shiva’s Hindu College made the wait worthwhile with a commanding 2-0 triumph over Annai Secondary School.

Early in the third minute of the clash, Shiva’s Gesiah Bishop was brought down in the penalty area by one the Rupununi based school’s player and Bishop made no mistake as he opted to covert the spot kick himself which he did successfully to see the visiting side drawing first blood in the fourth minute.

Shiva’s boys’ college dominated the match and it was evident that their level of training was different and they surely demonstrated such on the Carifesta Avenue ground.

The T&T lads pace, first touch and passing accuracy were excellent. The youngsters weren’t short of flicks and tricks and they had their fair bit of fun dribbling the Region Nine team that found it hard to get their footing.

Shiva’s boys only shortcoming was their finishing and delivery in the final third in the game which they should have scored at least two more goals.

Heading into half time, the score was two nil after the Skipper Nikel Roberts had blasted in a good strike from about 25 yards out in the 23rd minute.

After the win, Shiva’s Skipper, Roberts, noted that, “It (the match) was a tough challenge and I am happy that my team was good enough to come out with the win and we are looking forward to a fantastic tournament here in Guyana.”

Annandale played Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) in the second match last night. Up to press time, the score in the feature encounter was 0-0.

The KFC goodwill tournament features four school teams, three from Guyana and one for T&T battling for the KFC Cup in a round-robin format over three days.
