Last season’s “giant-killers” Carapichaima will be no pushover again this year in the BG T&T Secondary Schools Football League, according to coach Lawrence Rondon. The Central Zone champion team will start the defence of its zonal title today against Gasparillo at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, from 3.45 pm. Carapichaima drew a bye in its opening match on Tuesday while Gasparillo turned back Waterloo 3-1 in an upset. Carapichaima will be without the services of forwards Neil Woodroof, Andre Mohammed, Phillip “Judah” Wickham and stopper Andre Nichols. But coach Rondon has found a reliable replacement for Nichols in Kevin Dick, formerly of Waterloo, and is awaiting the arrival of three top players from other schools.

“Caps” spent the last week in a live-in camp in Cedros where it played three practice games against village teams. In other practice matches, Carapichaima drew 3-3 at home with St Mary’s and won away 3-2 and lost 2-1 to St Anthony’s. “The practice games showed the players what part they will play on the team. They fitted in nicely in their positions. The main thing is that we are scoring goals and I'm happy about that,” said Rondon. Rondon will be depending heavily on the strike force of Nathan James, Anton Gill and Shaquille Holder. “They are scoring goals and I expect plenty from the trio.” He also expects a huge season from skipper Michael Reneaud, who has been playing for his school for the last four seasons. In North Zone action, a win today by St Anthony’s could take it level with Fatima if the Mucurapo Road boys stumble. St Anthony’s will host St Mary’s College in Westmoorings while Fatima will be challenged by Trinity. Both matches will start at 3.45 pm.

The “Westmoorings Tigers” have played two matches winning both and are just behind Fatima, which is unbeaten after three rounds of matches. The task for St Anthony’s is much more difficult than that of Fatima, as the Nigel Grosvenor-coached unit will have to figure out a way to stop St Mary’s and the zone’s leading scorer Renaldo Garcia (three goals). In the other match scheduled in the North, Queens Royal College will try to regain its composure, after its 1-0 lost to St Mary’s on Tuesday, when it faces winless Woodbrook.

In the East Zone, San Juan returns to the field after being on a bye in the last round of matches, following wins its two opening matches (2-0) over Arima and 3-2 over East Trinity. The Bourg Mualtresse team travels to Toco and will rely heavily on striker Kurdell Braithwaite (two goals) to do the business. The other East Zone match will see cellar placed Sangre Grande and Arima doing battle. Both Goodwood and Roxborough were on the losing end when the Tobago Zone started on Tuesday but today both teams will look for better outcomes.

Goodwood will host Scarborough, which will be going for win No 2 in as many matches; while Roxborough will try to shake off the lost to Scarborough against Mason Hall at home. Down South, leader Naparima will be on a bye, leaving the other six teams to face the music. At the Dave Williams Recreation Ground, Penal, Shiva Boy’s will be aiming to get back on track after its 2-0 loss to Naps. Its opponents will be St Benedict’s. In Siparia, the homesters will host Vessigny while Presentation’s Kevin Moodie will try to increase his goal tally in his team’s match away to Princes Town. Moodie has found the net twice already for the season.
