’Caps’ were expected to win and they did so in style, welcoming their opponents back into the Championship Division with a severe whipping.

Anton Gill had a beaver-trick to lead the rout, and Caps will now face the winners of today’s East Zone final clash between ’Big Five’ champions St Augustine Secondary and El Dorado East Secondary, at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, from four p.m.. The losers meet South champs Presentation College San Fernando.

The Central Zone giants were just too much for their opponents yesterday, and never looked in danger despite numerous first half misses, but the scoreline could have been even more unflattering but for the solid defence of Tabaquite captain Kerron Knight, and his brave, but hapless goalie Arnold Johnson.

At the other end, Caps’s custodian Akiel Alfred had very little to do but for one second half save.

Kurt Griffith opened the scoring in the 16th, banging home after a pass across goal from Shaquille Holder.

After a number of misses and a timely intervention by Johnson on the half hour, Gill opened his account, sliding a Kerron Gray ball past Johnson in the 36th.

In the 41st Gray got on the scoresheet with a beautiful solo run of his own, to put Caps comfortably 3-0 ahead at the half.

Gill also slotted in goals in the 57th, 60th and 75th minutes before being substituted, and sub Antonio Jeffrey scored a close range effort in the 70th. Despite his strong defending, Knights knocked in an own goal in stoppage time to end a disappointing match for his team.

At the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Mason Hall claimed their first Tobago Zonal Intercol crown, courtesy of a 4-1 thrashing of 2008 champs Signal Hill.

The Zonal Finals will conclude today, in the East Zone, with reigning champs St Augustine opposing El Dorado at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, Arima. Kick-off time is 4 pm.
