U.S. sets back Trinidad
Forward Mark Peterson scored with 1:40 to play to lift the U.S. National soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in a World Cup qualifying game Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.Peterson took a pass from Erhardt Kapp in front of the goal and let go with a low 15-foot shot that beat Trinidad and Tobago goalie Michael Maurice.
Adrian Fonrose opened the scoring for Trinidad and Tobago at 18:41 of the first half on a pass from Julian Garcia. Fonrose faked U.S. defender Jeff Durgan off his feet and let go with 35-foot shot than cleanly beat U.S. goalie David Brcic.
The U.S. tied the score on a three-pass play that was started by Perry Van Der Beck, who sent a pass off to the side to Hugo Perez. Perez then hit Chico Borja, who beat Maurice at 23:30.
The game was the second step on a long path to Mexico City, where the World Cup tournament will be played in 1986. To qualify, the U.S. team must survive two games each against Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica in the second round, then defeat Canada and Honduras in the third round.
