Trinidad advance in football series

THERE was precious little glory for Trinidad in their two-nil triumph over Barbados in the second match of the quadrangular soccer series here today.

Trinidad were clearly the better side, playing to a plan, having better performers in attack and defence, and making more use of their opportunities.

Barbados on the other hand, played a roving centre half obviously too inexperienced to carry the game to the homesters.

But never did a team work so hard to so little purpose as did Trinidad.

From the start the ball was in the Barbados are; inside left Gray was running rings around the Barbados defence men and the visitors' goal was under constant bombardment. But only twice did Trinidad get through. Inside right Son Baptiste scored in the fifth minute and Gray headed in calmly in the 15th, as the bothered and bewildered Barbados defence men were left flatfooted.

Then Barbados came as close to scoring two goals as perhaps they will ever come in the series. A swift pile driver from inside right Haynes had Trinidad's goalkeeper Cax Baptiste floundering on the grounds as the ball escaped him. The ball came to rest between left winger Norville and inside left Downes with the goal wide open. They hesitated, looked at each other, tap-danced, then one of them kicked. By then the Trinidad goal was packed with defence players and the ball was cleared.

SECOND BLUNDER

The Trinidad defence blundered once more and the Barbados centre forward Alleyne was all alone in front of the goal with no defence men within touching distance of the ball. He too fumbled and was too late with the shot.

Meanwhile, Gray had put a magnificient header on the crossbar, but the Barbados defence was gaining confidence and kept the forwards at bay.

At half-time Trinidad were two up.

Except for one action-packed minute in the second half when Barbados goalkeeper Smith snatched the ball off the line, then in quick succession Hall headed the ball of the goal line and Gray hit the upright, Trinidad never really looked like scoring.

Barbados' defence used hustling tactics to break up the smooth Trinidad movements and goalkeeper Camie Smith timed and intercepted confidently to keep the goal safe.

Maybe the Trinidadians are taking things easily and the series must be regarded as wide open.

In the 24th minute Son Baptiste went off with an injured ankle. He was replaced by Franco.
