Bmobile Joe Public captain and talisman Kerry Baptiste rose from the dead to terrorise Clico/ Blink San Juan Jabloteh last night as the “Eastern Lions” romped to a 4-0 triumph over Jabloteh in the Toyota Classic Competition at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.
It is Public’s third title this season and will surely guarantee the club, owned by the Warner family, the “Club of the Year” title. Twenty-nine-year-old coach Derek King is a cert too for the “Coach of the Year” gong—having already helped the Lions to the Digicel Pro League and Big Six titles—and Baptiste can start clearing space on his trophy case for the Most Valuable Player and Top Scorer awards.
Yet, Friday the 13th of November, 2009 was more memorable for a Jabloteh horror show. At the final whistle, Joe Public were showering in champagne again with another deserved trophy. But it was a tad soulless. Something like “Jason” pumping his fists after carving up a defenceless woman in a bathroom.
Outside the ground, a Jabloteh director railed against the perceived injustice of playing Public at their headquarters rather than at a neutral venue and voiced his displeasure at match official, Neil Brizan. If Jabloth’s players exhibited just half his passion, though, it would have been a different match.
It is more than passing strange that Joe Public played all four of their Classic Competition fixtures at home. Yet, Jabloteh have won at Macoya before and are free to bring as many supporters as they like—there is rarely a shortage of seats at domestic matches. The “San Juan Kings” were their own worse enemies after chosing the wrong night to act like the guy who fumbles with his car keys as the demented slasher closes in.
