Needless to say that the recently concluded FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup was unlike any other local or regional eyes have seen before. The young women who came from far and wide to vie for the coveted trophy gave the world a show that we will not soon forget and not the least, our own history making young women, endearingly dubbed, the Soca Princesses.

Jamaal Shabazz, coach of the senior national women’s football team believes that local football fans should be fair in their criticisms towards Technical director of women’s football in T&T, Even Pellerud and the performance of the team in the Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup. “Let us be fair, the man (Pellerud) has done a great job up to this point,” said Shabazz. T&T’s U-17 Soca Princesses were knocked out of the U-17 Women’s World Cup, currently taking place in T&T, with 1-0 and 2-1 defeats to Korea DPR and Nigeria respectively after winning their opening match against Chile 2-1.

Trinidad and Tobago football legend and former Manchester United stand-out Dwight Yorke confirmed yesterday that he was not invited to Saturday's FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup final, which will be held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, as local organisers showed greater appreciation for foreign stars.

Young footballer Courtney Rose Bahadursingh had not visited Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of her mother Ria, and grandparents John and Rose, until she got the opportunity to play for the national football team at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Trinbagonians are yearning for some positivity in football. The sport has been plagued by failure upon failure, “steups” upon “steups,” corruption, mismanagement, and the ignorant, self-serving attitudes of administration and players. At the opening ceremony of the Fifa Women’s Under 17 World Cup Tournament at the National Stadium, I thought I was in for more of the same disappointment and series of “steupses” that emanates from every spectator’s lips during a Soca Warrior experience. Yet still I went, with some sliver of hope for something different, something optimistic and encouraging. It appears that plebians in uncovered stands are actually invisible, and therefore we had to watch the backs of performers from across the field and track while they entertained those in the covered stands.

Soca Princesses’ coach, Even Pellerud received high praises from Concacaf president and T&T Football Federation Special Advisor, Jack Warner yesterday. Warner made the statements while speaking at the opening ceremony of a coaching clinic conducted by the Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) at the Ken Galt Hall, Center of Excellence, Macoya, yesterday. The Norwegian-born Pellerud led the Soca Princesses to its first ever Under-17 Women’s World Cup where they defeated Chile 2-1 before losing to Nigeria 2-1 and 2008 winners, Korea DPR 1-0 to miss out on qualifying for the quarterfinal round. The win over Chile created history for T&T as it was the first by any national team at a World Cup Finals tournament.

It is never easy to lose. Especially in front of your home fans, but on Sunday all hope in our spirited Women Under-17 World Cup team advancing to the quarter final came crashing down, when the young women produced their worst performance in front of a sell out crowd, to lose 1-0 to North Korea.
