Trinidad and Tobago's National Under 20 women's team lost 1-0 to Puerto Rico in their opening match of the Caribbean Football Union Qualifiers at the Pedro Marrero National Stadium in Cuba on Saturday morning.
The T&T team, coached by Marlon Charles, conceded a second half goal and will now attempt to rebound from the loss when they face Guyana tomorrow (11am, Monday).
T&T went into the game without midfielder Khadidra Debesette after she sustained an injury in Friday's training session.
And during the match, Abigail Jacob had to leave the field with a first half injury. To make matters worse, Janelle Mc Gee was shown a red card along with a Cuban player in the second half.
Charles later said his team did not play to their potential. "In the first half our team did not mark close enough and we were a bit disorganized,"Charles told TTFF Media. "
"Puerto Rico was more aggressive to the ball and won every ball they contested. In attack we were not connecting right and poor technique resulted in poor passing of the ball.
"In the second half our team put up a much better fight as we were more organized. But some of our players just did not rise to the challenge and give the fight we would have wanted. Now we must regroup and come again for the next match," Charles said.
