T&T’s Under-15 girls team will need at least a draw against Honduras today to assure themselves of a place in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Under-15 Championship after having to settle for a 1-1 draw with Bermuda at the Ed Bush Sports Complex in the Cayman Islands on Friday.
Following their convincing 4-0 shut-out of Barbados on Wednesday, T&T began proceedings well again and went ahead through an 11th minute goal by US-based midfielder Raenah Campbell.
But Bermuda hit back a minute into the second half courtesy of a goal by Nia Christopher and they went on to defend doggedly for the remainder of the half to ensure a share of the points.
T&T head coach Rajesh Latchoo was somewhat disappointed with the result but credited his girls for staying unbeaten in two games.
“We deserved the three points in this match. We had better possession but once we conceded early in the second half, Bermuda packed their defence and adopted a kick and rush approach which worked well for them,” Latchoo said.
“We outshot them with about six chances coming for us while they had two but we failed to convert and that cost us the three points. But all in all, I cannot fault our girls for the performance, Obviously now we will go into the Honduras match with a lot to play for. We had a chance to see them in the first match against Bermuda so we know what they can offer. We’ll try to get a positive result to get out of the group and keep building from there.”
T&T will clash with Honduras from 5.30 pm at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. Honduras tops the group currently with six points after their 3-0 defeat of Barbados on Friday, while T&T sits in second position with four points and Bermuda third on one point. T&T holds a plus four-goal difference while Bermuda has a -1 difference. The top two teams will qualify for the quarter-finals.
