St. Francis-Mountain View senior defender Lauren Schmidt will play soccer for Stanford next year as a recruited walk-on.

Schmidt was a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Youth National Team that played at the U-17 Youth World Cup in Trinidad last September.

Schmidt's mother, Leslie, was born in Trinidad. Lauren Schmidt, a resident of San Martin, talked to Daily News reporter John Reid after the Lancers' 2-1 victory over St. Ignatius-San Francisco on Saturday.

Q: How did you end up at Stanford?
A: I was seen last year when I played in Las Vegas last March. The defensive coach, Jay Cooney, saw me first. He told (Stanford head coach) Paul Ratcliffe to come out and see me the next game. I did not think I would ever have a shot at Stanford. Once I got the offer, I was super excited for the opportunity.

Q: What are some of the things you like to do besides playing soccer?
A: I love hanging out with my family and friends and going to Trinidad. That's where my mom is from. I have a lot of ties there.

Q: What was it like to play on the Trinidad and Tobago Youth National Team?
A: It was incredible. I got to experience a new culture. It was unlike anything I've ever done in my life.

Q: What do you have on your iPod?
A: I listen to alternative, rock and pop.

Q: What does St. Francis have to do to win the Central Coast Section playoffs?
A: The main thing is we have to keep our focus, either once we're down, or once we're ahead. We tend to get a little crazy.
