For the first time in history, a professional football club from Puerto Rico has won a tournament organized by CONCACAF or the Caribbean Football Union (CFU).

The Puerto Rico Islanders beat San Juan Jabloteh, 1-0, in the first game with a goal from former San Juan Jabloteh striker Nicholas Addlery in the 19th minute. With the win, the Islanders finished the CFU Club Championship's Final Round with two wins and a tie for seven points.

In the second game, fellow Puerto Rican side Bayamon FC won, 3-1, against Joe Public to obtain its first victory in the Final Round of the Caribbean championship and in the process left Joe Public in second place with four points and a record of 1-1-1.

San Juan Jabloteh and Bayamon FC both finished with three points with one win and two losses each. The first tiebreaker is the head-to-head record and Bayamon FC lost, 4-1, to San Juan Jabloteh, thus giving the Trinidad club the third spot in the Caribbean tournament.

The three best teams in the 2010 CFU Club Championship earn a place in the 2010-2011 CONCACAF Champions League.

With the championship, the Puerto Rico Islanders became the first professional club that does not belong to the professional football leagues of Trinidad & Tobago or Jamaica to win the tournament. Since 1997, professional teams from Trinidad & Tobago have won the tournament eight times and while Jamaican teams have won three times.

The members of the Puerto Rico Women’s National Football Team, which are in Trinidad & Tobago to play the in the Caribbean’s final qualifying phase to play in the 2010 Women’s Gold Cup next week, were present for both games today, rooting for both Puerto Rican clubs and celebrated with the Puerto Rico Islanders their history-making championship.

Islanders win CFU Club Championship.

Puerto Rico Islanders won their first Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship title on Sunday night after edging Trinidad and Tobago’s San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 at the Marvin Lee Stadium, then seeing their nearest rivals, T&T’s Joe Public, upset 1-3 by Bayamon FC, another Puerto Rico club.

The final night results still ensured that Joe Public (4 pts) and San Juan Jabloteh (3 pts) both qualified for the 2010-2011 CONCACAF Champions League, along with 2010 Caribbean champions Puerto Rico Islanders (7 pts).

Bayamon FC, who also finished with three points after their victory over Joe Public, lost the third qualifying spot on an inferior goal-difference to Jabloteh.

On Sunday at Macoya, the Islanders looked the slightly better team as they beat ten-man Jabloteh on a 20th minute header from Jamaican Nicholas Addlery, who had spent a few seasons in Trinidad and Tobago playing for Petrotrin.

Jabloteh lost midfielder Elijah Manners for the final ten minutes after he picked up two yellow cards in just over a minute. Manners had come closest to a Jabloteh equaliser when catching keeper Williams Gaudette backpeddaling, striking the crossbar with a chipped shot.

The Islanders’s victory left Joe Public needing to handsomely beat bottom team Bayamon, who had already lost to both the Islanders (3-0) and Jabloteh (4-1). But, in chasing the five goals which would have seen them overhaul the Islanders on goal-average, Joe Public often left their defence exposed to the quick counter-attack.

With Joe Public pressing early, fans were shocked when Alan Riaza took a ball over the top and placed it past goalie Marvin Phillip to give Bayamon a one-goal advantage.

Joe Public continued attacking and right winger Hayden Tinto went close in the 12th with a shot that just curled away from the far post.

Joe Public lost key midfielder Trent Noel to injury in the 24th minute, but were level at 1-1 in the 29th when central defender Radanfah Abu Bakr headed in Tinto’s corner-kick. A minute later Marcus Joseph should have scored, but instead spooned over a well set up pass from Tinto at the edge of the penalty area.

On the half hour, substitute Andre Toussaint set up strike partner Kerry Baptiste, whose low shot crashed off the foot of the Bayamon post. And in the 40th the Eastern Lions Japanese midfielder Yu Hoshide also forced the Bayamon keeper to touch away his shot, which was angled towards the far post.

While Joe Public continued to be wasteful, Bayamon struck again against the run of play through Adrian Brown, who scored from close up in the 53rd minute, giving the Puerto Ricans a 2-1 lead.

Having made their substitutions, Joe Public were down to ten players when losing Baptiste to injury. Bayamon again caught them on the counter-attack in the 56th, Kendall Manley darting in at the near post to touch in a low cross from Cesar Quesada to make the score 3-1.

Desperate, Joe Public even threw central defender Carlyle Mitchell, a former T&T national Under-23 and Caledonia AIA striker, into attack. He produced some havoc in the Bayamon defence but not goals, while Toussaint had a good, angled shot pushed wide by goalie Maximiliano Torlacoff, who saved well for Bayamon.
