Super League outfit Malabar FC responded from a half-time deficit to record a 4-2 win over Secondary Schools’ East Zone champion St Augustine Secondary, to book a spot in the T&T Football Association FA Trophy round-of-32, yesterday.

The preliminary fixture was played at St Augustine Secondary, with the winning team, Malabar responding well to a 2-1 half time deficit, to win by the comfortable margin.

It was Malabar, in fact, which had opened the scoring through Shandel Samuel in the 10th minute. The lead, however, was short lived as Green Machine stormed back with goals from season-long stand-out performers in Jordan Devonish (16th) and national youth player Shannon Gomez (41st).

Malabar took its time to get back into the fixture, but a quickfire double from Armstrong (70th and 76th), saw it reclaim the lead. The scoring was finalized two minutes into added time courtesy a strike from Julio Noel.

The win put Malabar up against Penal All Stars. The two teams will meet tomorrow, while 15 other knockout matches are played. With St Augustine eliminated and Presentation College of San Fernando withdrawn, St Mary’s College and Carapichaima East Secondary remain the only two SSFL teams left in the competition.
