Yorke gives away penalty against Haiti as... T&T loses 1-0
| Dwight Yorke, playing his first game for T&T in four years, gave away a penalty, which was the only goal in the Soca Warriors third friendly against Haiti in six days, and a final tune-up before tomorrows CONCACAF World Cup qualifying final round match against the United States at Queens Park Oval. Peter Germain converted the first-half penalty on Sunday, at Shaw Park in Tobago, to gave the Haitians their only win in the three-match series. The loss gave T&T coach Bertille St. Clair some worries, unwanted at this time, about his team, as he fielded a full complement of overseas professionals just three days ahead of the important clash against the USA. T&T had beaten Haiti 1-0 and 2-1 in the two earlier matches last week, and although the passing was crisper and more organised than in the previous matches, there were fewer incisive attacks. I am not going to cry down the players at this stage; the team didnt do too badly, but at the same time we dont want to look too lightly at what happened today, St. Clair said after the match. The Haitians had a very positive first-half and were rewarded with the decisive goal in the 19th minute, when Yorke, now with Birmingham and formerly of Manchester United, fouled Bruny Pierre in the box for Germain to outfox goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, who moved in the wrong direction. Haiti had other chances in the first-half, and Romulus Turlien, who had scored in Thursdays 2-1 loss, hit the bar from close range from a left side cross. T&T, ranked secondbehind Jamaicain the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), two places ahead of the Haitians, thus saw its four-game winning streak in warm-up games snapped. Before Sundays loss. T&T had two wins over Haiti last week, and similar results against Azerbaijan. After tackling confederation giants USA on Wednesday, T&T will be facing Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, and Panama in the home-and-away CONCACAF round-robin series, which run until November this year. Three will automatically qualify for the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany. The CONCACAF fourth-place finisher will compete in a home-and-away play-off against the fifth-place finisher of the Asian Football Confederation, for one of the last spots to Germany.
