THE battle for the 10th and final super league spot took a twist as the Wingmakers snatched an 89th- minute winner from Josh Johnson to move three points clear of Carmarthen.

Home boss Deryn Brace had labelled this a “must-win” affair to keep their prospects on course and must have been bitterly disappointed at the manner of this setback.

It was a game between two evenly-matched sides with defences generally on top – and a solitary goal was always likely to win it.

In the end, Airbus held their nerve and snatched the only chance that mattered to bag three vital points.

On the balance of play, a draw would have been a fair result, so the Wingmakers will be delighted to have come up trumps.

There were few chances early on, with much of the play competitive and concentrated in the middle of the field. The first clear-cut chance fell to Carmarthen when Kris Thomas saw his effort cleared off the line after 10 minutes.

Airbus were well served by full back Giovanni Feliciello whose cultured left foot created panic in the home defence with his crossing.

It almost paid dividends when Neil Thomas was called upon to produce a superb save to deny Carl Owen.

In the end a mistake led to the decisive score and it was Carmarthen who blundered when a minute from time Kris Thomas fed back to his ’keeper and namesake Neil.

He seemed in control until he made a rash decision to dribble his way away from goal and was promptly dispossessed by Airbus substitute Josh Johnson who collected the ball and slotted a simple goal.

Thomas held his head in his hands in frustration after such a gift and Carmarthen were left to rue a moment of madness for the downfall.
