The Panamanian Football Federation (FePaFut) has confirmed that Colombian coach Jose Hernandez will take charge of the upcoming friendly against Bahrain, despite being sacked after the FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers.
Hernandez's contract was terminated by FePaFut, who said the team was not competitive enough during their campaign. Bahrain, having made it to a Germany 2006 qualifying play-off against Trinidad and Tobago, have organised this friendly in preparation, and so Hernandez has been asked to return while they seek a long-term replacement.
Under Hernandez, Panama made it into the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying for the first time ever, but then they ended that phase winless, with eight defeats from ten games.
Hernandez also guided the Central American nation to the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time in their history, where they lost to the United States on penalties.
