Caribbean Premier League to contract 90 players

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the inaugural edition of which is set to begin on July 29, will include six franchises with 90 contracted players in all. Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy and Kieron Pollard have been named 'franchise players'. Each of these icon players will turn out for one of the six teams, which are likely to be from Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

This was announced by the WICB, alongside Verus International - the Barbados and USA-based company that is funding the Twenty20 league - during a press conference in St James on Tuesday. The CPL agreement between Verus International and the West Indies board stands for a minimum of 20 years. This tournament, the WICB reaffirmed, will replace the existing Caribbean T20 as region's domestic Twenty20 competition.

The financial benefits that the league will offer the players are a big positive, WICB president Julian Hunte said: "The WICB is elated with the agreement, which will allow for regional retainer contracts for a broad pool of players. These contracts will be funded by the CPL to the tune of US$360,000 annually. This significant investment will truly allow for cricketers in the Caribbean to pursue their profession as professionals."

The icon players will not necessarily represent their country in the league. Dirk Hall, managing director of Verus International, said this was to ensure better balance: "The CPL has chosen the top six T20 players in the region based on their stats and performances in this format of the game. Doing it this way ensures that each team is bolstered by a talented, top West Indian player, and that there is balance and fairness across the board on all six teams."

The CPL is also looking to rope in six international 'franchise players', one for each franchise. Every franchise will contract 15 players in all, with a maximum of four overseas signings. Of the regional players, at least six must be from the franchise country (in the case of St Lucia, locals will include players from the Windwards Islands and the in case of Antigua, players from the Leeward Islands) and four must be under-23 players. Apart from the appointed icon players, the rest of the squads will be assembled via a draft system, the working details of which are as yet unknown.

The WICB confirmed that the tournament's schedule has been drawn up so that the dates do not clash with any other West Indies international or domestic tournaments, or the IPL. All contracted players will be under an obligation to turn out for their franchises in the tournament.

The inaugural edition will include 30 group matches, followed by an eliminator and a final. Each of the franchises will play the other five on a home and away basis during the group stage.

The 2014 edition of the CPL is scheduled to be played between July 5 and August 10, while the 2015 tournament will run from June 21 to July 26.

I don't understand why this format and the original one can't co-exist? Even if they want to use this one for the CL the original should still be apart of the 4 day and 50 over schedule.

The TT franchise may lose Pollard,Narine and Bravo so we may have to look outside of the Caribbean for someone to replace Pollard, having just seen Afridi battering the Saffie bowlers he could be the one to replace KP,Narine and Bravo wont be as great a loss as Pollard.

This CPL is going to be nothing more than a holiday for old cricketers who have pseed their "sell by date"it will be devoid of national fevour because the islands will lose their "franchise players",who wants to see Gilchrist or any other foreigner playing for TT.We have just won the 20/20 WC and also had a very successful 20/20 championship in the Caribbean why do we have to spoil that.I am sure that their would have been greater excitement for the Caribbean people had our teams gone to the IPL as Jamaica,TT,Barbados etc. This diluted shit wont have the emotions that goes when you are supporting your own,I hope the shit dont last.

Only two have been announced. Too early to be calling it a old cricketers league. That's the way the world moving, is either you sink or swim like it or not. I prefer to see Trinidad play, but we can't stop it, so Leh enjoy the ride and see how it goes.

CPL PREPARES TO ROLL OUT MAJOR TV ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

Port of Spain, Trinidad – Tuesday, 2nd April 2013 – West Indies cricket players, a Boeing 767 jet, Trinidad Carnival dancers, several musical artistes and a monkey named Chico all feature in the Caribbean Premier League’s TV advertising campaign which will be unveiled shortly and aired around the world in the lead up to the tournament which takes place in July and August.

Five of the six regional franchise players – Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Marlon Samuels and Sunil Narine – along with local and regional talent were part of two intense days of filming in Trinidad which went into the wee hours of the morning, and will result in several TV commercials.

The theme of the campaign, “We’ve Come To Play”, focuses on all the people who will be a part of the Caribbean Premier League, from the players and the fans to the dancers, the entertainers, the tourists and the celebrities, and speaks to the unifying power of the game, and more specifically what the public can expect from the CPL.

“When it comes to West Indies cricket, everyone rallies together,” said Rhonda Kelly, CPL event organiser, who was joined by a team of international creative directors and producers for the shoot.  “The idea behind this campaign is to let the world know that whether it’s on the pitch, in the stands, on the stage or on TV, the CPL is going to show the world how only the Caribbean can ‘play’.  It’s so much more than a sport; it is going to be an amazing experience where everyone comes to play.”

The CPL franchise players enjoyed the experience and liked the theme for the campaign.  Delivering his line in the ad, ‘we’ve come to play’ renowned Batsman Chris Gayle was his usual jovial self and had fun with the part, relating, “I really like the theme, everyone who comes to cricket comes to play, the difference is we’re playing on the pitch and they’re playing in the stands.”

Gayle also appreciated that the ads are more than just about cricket, they’re about showing people the Caribbean and all that is has to offer, “The chance to promote the game and at the same time my home in the Caribbean is great, I really think people will enjoy the ads, it was fun to do and made me appreciate even more all of the people who join in and support us when we play.”

The inaugural 2013 Caribbean Premier League tournament takes place from 29 July to 26 August across the Caribbean.  Along with the six regional franchise players, two international franchise players – Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist - have been announced to date.

90 players in total will be contracted to play in the CPL. Each of the six Franchise teams will be comprised of 15 players.  All teams are required to have a minimum number of local players from that particular country.  At least four of them must be under the age of 23, and teams can also field a maximum of four international players.  The remainder of the team must consist of regional and/or local players.

Third International Franchise Player Announced

The former Black Caps captain, part of the side that reached successive ICC Cricket World Cups semi-finals in 2007 (in the Caribbean) and 2011, as well as the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009, has a career strike-rate of 142.79 in the shortest form of the game. He has been a fixture in the New Zealand side for seven years and has proved himself as a world-class performer in all formats of the game.

Taylor can also lay claim to the fastest Test hundred in his country’s history, reaching three figures against Australia in Hamilton from only 81 balls in 2010.

Among current Black Caps players, no-one can match his tally of eight hundreds in Tests and seven three-figure scores in One-Day Internationals.

Only four players in Black Caps history can better his total of Test hundreds – Martin Crowe (17), John Wright (12), Nathan Astle (11) and Stephen Fleming (nine) – while his haul in ODIs places him third on his country’s list, with only Astle (16) and Fleming (eight) scoring more.

Only 29 years old, Taylor has captained New Zealand in 13 Tests, 20 ODIs and 13 Twenty20 Internationals and Caribbean fans will be well aware of his quality in the shortest form of the game as he blazed an unbeaten 62 from just 40 balls against the West Indies in the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.

His ability to lead from the front was illustrated by his superb double of 142 and 74 in a Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo last November, a performance that inspired New Zealand to a series-leveling win.

That batting power has ensured Taylor has been an ever-present figure in the Indian Premier League since its inception in 2008, with spells at Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils and, for this year, the Pune Warriors.

Speaking on the announcement, Taylor relayed, “I am very excited about playing in the first ever edition of the Caribbean Premier League. As current World Champions the West Indies have been a force in T20 cricket over the past couple of years, and CPL should help uncover new international superstars in the mould of Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine. The Caribbean is one of my favourite places to play cricket and with the passionate crowds, the great atmosphere and the athletic style of play, I'm looking forward to being a part of this exciting competition."

Taylor joins a stellar list of world-class players who have already been confirmed for this year’s inaugural CPL. Already contracted are Australia legends Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist, alongside the six already-confirmed West Indies franchise players: Darren Sammy, Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard and Marlon Samuels.

90 players will be contracted to play in the CPL. Each of the six Franchise teams will be comprised of 15 players. All teams are required to have a minimum number of local players from that particular country. At least four of them must be under the age of 23, and teams can also field a maximum of four international players. The remainder of the team must consist of regional and/or local players.

More international players will be announced in the coming weeks, according to CPL organisers, as plans kick into high gear in preparation for the biggest sporting event in the Caribbean.

Mohammad Hafeez joins CPL

Bridgetown.

Pakistan’s Twenty20 International (T20I) captain, Mohammad Hafeez, is the latest major international star to join the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The 32 year-old all-rounder is one of the eight players to  have scored more than 1000 international runs in the shortest form of the game.

Hafeez joins Australia duo Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist, together with former New Zealand captain Ross Taylor, as international franchise players already contracted for the inaugural CPL, which will take place between 29 July and 26 August across the Caribbean.

He underlined his top-quality credentials in Twenty20 cricket as recently as last month when he blitzed the South Africa attack, scoring 86 – his highest score in the T20Is – from only 51 balls at Centurion with nine fours and four sixes before taking 3-25 with his off-spin.

His Twenty20 career strike-rate of 130.73 runs per hundred balls marks him down as one of the most dangerous top-order players in the modern game while his bowling economy rate of 6.31 underlines his skills in that area too.

He has captained his country in 14 T20 matches  as well as one Test, against Sri Lanka in Galle last year, and is in second place in the International Cricket Council’s rankings of all-rounders in both T20Is and ODIs, behind Shane Watson of Australia in the former and Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan in the latter.

“The World T20 in the Caribbean allowed me to experience playing T20 in the Caribbean and I am looking forward to playing there once again. The people in the West Indies love their cricket and I am sure the fans will get behind their teams. I also hope that cricket fans back in Pakistan and around the world will follow me during this first CPL season, and join in the fun", says Hafeez.

The West Indian franchise players are Darren Sammy, Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard and Marlon Samuels.

Ninety players will be contracted to play in the CPL. Each of the six Franchise teams will be comprised of 15 players.

All teams are required to have a minimum number of local players from their particular franchise country.

At least four of them must be under the age of 23, and teams can also field a maximum of four international players.

The remainder of the team must consist of regional or local players.  The six franchise countries named to date are Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago.

DIGICEL ANNOUNCED AS MAJOR SPONSOR FOR CARIBBEAN PREMIER LEAGUE

The Caribbean Premier League has signed global telecommunications company and long term West Indies Cricket sponsor Digicel as a major sponsor of the newly formed CPL which will host its inaugural tournament in July and August.

The Caribbean Premier League has signed global telecommunications company and long term West Indies Cricket sponsor Digicel as a major sponsor of the newly formed CPL which will host its inaugural tournament in July and August.

“We are thrilled to have Digicel as our partner in this venture,” said CPL founder Ajmal Khan of Verus International. “Its wealth of experience in the region and in West Indies cricket will be an invaluable asset to the CPL, ensuring its initial and long-term success.”

Digicel has been the main sponsor of West Indies Cricket since 2004.  Since that time the company has proven its worth as a marketing leader in the region - something that CPL appreciates will bring great value to the tournament.

“The Digicel brand is a strong one - one that has captivated the Caribbean, and we are sure it will help us to do the same with the CPL brand,” concluded Khan. “Digicel has built a rock-solid reputation globally, and its positioning in the region and commitment to cricket can only serve to enhance the CPL product further.”

The sponsorship will be a multi-year deal and represents a significant investment from Digicel

“The CPL is a perfect fit for Digicel.  We’re huge fans of West Indies cricket and this is a great opportunity for us to invest not only in what will be an amazing event, but also in the young cricketers who will benefit from around the region,” stated Digicel Group Marketing Director Kieran Foley. “Having seen all the plans for the inaugural tournament, we know the CPL will be a spectacle like nothing else seen in the region and we are looking forward to being front and centre of the action.”

Foley says that in addition to marketing expertise, Digicel also brings a wealth of other benefits to the CPL, including its integral and long-term involvement in the regional sport which has created invaluable relationships with the West Indies and regional players; the company’s  presence in all of the possible CPL franchise countries which will provide  welcomed addition for the CPL throughout the region and the familiarity with and respect that West Indies fans have for Digicel because of its close connection with the game and the fans.

However the T&T Guardian is reporting that Ponting has indicated to the organizers his interest in playing for the Trinidad franchise.

It’s been reported as well that Hafeez is expected to go to Guyana while South African Hershelle Gibbs is said to be in talks with organisers to be stationed in Barbados once his contract details are sorted out.

The inaugural CPL, from July 29 to August 26, has replaced the regional T20 tournament and is targeting a substantial regional and global television audience.

Nah!
Iz one thing to play for cities, but our players representing countries is crap!
They should name the clubs by cities....like Georgetown Gaffers or Bridgetown Bullas

I can't hear announcers say Narine from Guyana played well, or Pollard from Barbados beat Trinidad...
or worse yet see them play with Guyana or Barbados on dey jersey

whey boy!

HISTORY-MAKER HERSCHELLE GIBBS THE LATEST BIG NAME TO SIGN UP FOR CARIBBEAN PREMIER LEAGUE

South African top-order batting powerhouse Herschelle Gibbs, the first man in history to hit six sixes in a single over in international cricket, has become the latest player to sign up for this year’s Caribbean Premier league (CPL).

South African top-order batting powerhouse Herschelle Gibbs, the first man in history to hit six sixes in a single over in international cricket, has become the latest player to sign up for this year’s Caribbean Premier league (CPL).

Gibbs achieved the feat in the Caribbean, in St Kitts during the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, when he dispatched Netherlands leg-spinner Daan van Bunge over the ropes six times in a row.

And while four other players* - including Barbados and West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers – have done it before or since in professional cricket, Gibbs was the first man to hit six sixes on the international stage.

It is part of an hugely impressive cricketing career that the right-hander, now 39, will bring to the CPL table, having represented teams all over the world, including being part of the Deccan Chargers squad that won the Indian Premier League in 2009.

Speaking to the CPL Organisers, Herschelle’s enthusiasm was obvious, “I am really looking forward to playing in the first CPL. I love the Caribbean and have great memories of touring there. The people are lovely and although each nation is different, they all have that same warmth and charm that makes everyone want to go there. Many of the West Indies players have become my friends over the years and playing alongside them in their home countries will really be special.”

Gibbs joins fellow international stars Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist from Australia, New Zealand’s Ross Taylor and Pakistan Twenty20 International (T20I) captain Mohammad Hafeez as confirmed big-name signings for the inaugural franchise-based tournament that will take place across six countries in July and August.

Also confirmed are six West Indies franchise players – Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy and Marlon Samuels.

Despite some speculation in the press the announcement of which players will be playing for which countries, this information is still to be announced by the CPL. So as with the others the country Gibbs will be playing for is not confirmed.

Gibbs’ international career spans 15 years and includes 90 Tests, 248 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 23 T20Is.

He has 35 hundreds for his country, 21 of them coming in ODIs – the most by a South African player.

Two of those hundreds came in the Caribbean in the 2001 ODI series against the West Indies, with 104 in Antigua and 107 in Barbados.

Gibbs toured the West Indies three times with the South Africa senior squad, in 2001, 2005 and for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup when South Africa lost to eventual champions Australia in the semi-final in St Lucia.

He totalled 342 runs in that tournament at an average of 57.00, including four fifties and a highest score of 72 from only 40 deliveries in that record-breaking innings against the Dutch.

Gibbs has played a total of 164 Twenty20 matches around the world, most recently for the Perth Scorchers in Australia and for the Titans in his home country.

Gibbs helped the Australian franchise to successive appearances in the final of the Big Bash League in 2011 and 2012 and also played for the Scorchers in last year’s Champions League Twenty20 tournament in South Africa.

With a career strike-rate of 124.03 runs per hundred balls in the shortest form of the game he is a huge threat to any bowling attack and has one Twenty20 hundred to his credit, an unbeaten 101 from only 53 balls for English county Yorkshire against Northamptonshire in 2010.

Gibbs is also an electric fielder in any position but especially inside the fielding circle with superb agility and a devastating and deadly-accurate throwing arm.

Further details and announcements concerning the CPL, including news of further confirmed players for the tournament, will be made in due course and the player draft will take place on 24 May.

A total of 90 players will be contracted to play in the CPL. Each of the six Franchise teams will be comprised of 15 players.  All teams are required to have a minimum number of local players from that their particular franchise country.  At least four of them must be under the age of 23, and teams can also field a maximum of four international players.  The remainder of the team must consist of regional and/or local players.

THIS FRANCHISE IS A LOAD OF BULLSHIT THAT HAS THROWN ME CLEAN OFF,I cannot see how I will appreciate Pollard taking the Bajan franchise to the Champions League at the expense of TT,or for that matter Narine doing likewise for Guyana. That takes all the emotions out of me,I dont like this mickey mouse nonsense where our star players have gone to other islands.I dont care for anyone to tell me we are West Indians and it doesn't matter,we are Windians only when we play test cricket. Why should we nuture stars like Pollard and Narine and then lose them. That fella Khan is certainly planning for the Bim franchise to win, isn't that where he lives,I suspected all along that was going to happen.
I have dropped all plans for a nice long holiday in the Caribbean and most Trinis I speak to are not willing to come and see a watered down TT team play.

Yeh seeing Narine play for a Guyanese team is Bullshit. They take all our best players and spread them out.

BUT. Trinis like to lime and Party, School will be closed. I expect big crowds still. If we start losing games knowing the waggonist they will stop coming.

I wouldn't mind franchise teams if the Caribbean was one country like India,Australia,South Africa,Pakistan,Bangladesh and the others, they are all one country and can identify with each other. We are many different Islands and we all have our own little differences in culture, language, behaviour etc.We dont hate each other although some people may dispute that,we love our own heroes and when they are taken away from us we are left to support an outsider by force.Franchise is not for us,tell Mr.Ajmal to stay in Barbados and build up a Bajan team with Bim players. He is a Bimmer at heart and he wants Bim to be champs.

Not sure if my following question has been addressed already.

Will the contracts of the CPL franchise players such as Bravo, Pollard, Narine, Gayle etc. that are currently playing in the IPL come to an end/terminated? I ask this because these player were contractually obligated to play for there IPL teams in the T20 CL and not the T&T team they helped qualify for the T20 CL.

As far as I know, there is no rule that says a player is obligated to play for his IPL team in the Champions league. From what I understand, a player is free to represent either his home club or his IPL club in the CL. However, should he choose to represent his IPL club, that club must compensate the home club for the loss of the player ( $250,000 USD)...and not vice versa.
In view of this, the players wanted to play for T&T in the CL but the IPL kicked up a fuss and threatened to blacklist players from T&T if they didn't represent their respective IPL teams in the CL......so the players were forced to "abandon" T&T.

Also, the players you mentioned are already contracted with other T20 leagues around the world, so their IPL contracts wouldn't be terminated for them to play in the CPL. It just so happens that none of their other respective teams made it to the Champions league.

They nasty boy. Funny thing is all the IPL teams got knocked out of the tournament.

I hoping the top four IPL teams in the playoff have no Trinis in them. Doubt that will happen though.
