Trinidad and Tobago track star Josanne Lucas put a whipping on Jamaica’s reigning Olympic and world women’s 400 metres hurdles champion Melaine Walker, at the Sesi Caixa Grand Prix meet, in Uberlandia, Brazil, on Wednesday. Lucas produced a 55.25 seconds clocking to triumph in the one-lap hurdles, beating another Jamaican, Nickiesha Wilson (55.68) into second spot. Walker finished third in 55.90.
The victory over Walker was only Lucas’ third in 17 head-to-head meetings between the two in the 400m hurdles. The T&T athlete’s two previous successes came way back in 2006.
Their most famous clash took place last August, in the World Championship final, in Berlin, Germany. Walker topped the field to add the world title to her Olympic gold medal, while Lucas bagged bronze to become T&T’s first ever female medallist at the global track and field meet.
Wednesday’s race was Lucas’ second 2010 outing in the 400m hurdles. Earlier this month, she won the event at the Jamaica International Invitational, in Kingston, in 54.96 seconds. The clocking puts her in fourth spot on the 2010 IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) world performance list. Americans Lashinda Demus (53.34) and Queen Harrison (54.66) and Russia’s Natalya Antyukh (54.83) are the only athletes faster than Lucas this year.
