Can anyone slow down the 'Trinidad Rocket'? Sheldon Bissessar takes Top Dragster by storm
motorsports.com

NORWALK, Ohio (February 11, 2010) -- Sheldon Bissessar has always had the drive to be the fastest.

From his early days racing at an airstrip in his home country of Trinidad and Tobago to his current gig as the world's fastest sportsman in the IHRA Top Dragster ranks, Bissessar has always known drag racing was his future.

"I have always had a passion for speed with encouragement from my mother Stella Bissessar and from my family and friends," said Bissessar. "I still remember my first car being a Ford Escort powered by a Ford Pinto 4 cylinder engine. It ran the quarter-mile in approximately 17 seconds and at the time that seemed really fast for me."

Bissessar has since graduated from his days running the quarter-mile in double digits, currently holding the Top Dragster world record at 5.793 seconds at 238.76 miles per hour set earlier this year at Palm Beach International Raceway. Bissessar also made quite a splash at that event winning the inaugural Harland Sharp Elite 8 race in Top Dragster.

Now, with a new record in hand and the first of what he hopes is many Elite 8 victories, Bissessar is preparing for an exciting year behind the wheel of his PSTL, IRONMAN Chassis and Total Lubricants dragster traveling the newly redesigned Nitro Jam tour.

Sheldon Bissessar has taken Top Dragster by storm with record-setting passes.

"The Elite 8 program is great and the IHRA is on a rebound. We want to ride the comeback waves with them," said an ecstatic Bissessar. "If the new format sticks, it is going to turn into something really great."

And Bissessar's journey to the top all began running the strips of Trinidad and Tobago.

As Bissessar's passion for speed began to blossom at the old Walleferield airstrip and he started to dig deeper into the world of drag racing, Bissessar began to take notice that some of the fastest drivers in the world weren't behind the wheel of a car. They were, in fact, in the cockpit of a dragster.

"I went from car to car in an attempt to become faster and move into higher brackets. As I continued racing legends like Joe Amato, Don 'The Snake' Purdhomme and Eddie Hill became my inspiration. It was then that I decided I wanted to drive a dragster," Bissessar recalled.

Bissessar began his venture into the world of dragsters with a mild steel chassis powered by a 350 small block Chevy running the quarter-mile 11 seconds at a time. Feeling the need to go faster still, Bissessar began experimenting with different combinations over the past decade before finally settling on the dragster he currently uses today - a former Top Alcohol Dragster powered by a blown 526 cubic inch Hemi previously owned by Jeff Veale.

With the power he needed, all that was left was to find a crew chief and Bissessar was ready for his assault on the drag racing world.

"I knew nothing about supercharged engines so it was necessary to take the next step and find a crew chief," said Bissessar. "It was quite a search until I came in contact with Mr. Aaron Sipple, son of legendary Top Fuel driver 'Doc' Sipple. After talking with him I knew that he was the man for this job."

With car and crew chief in place Bissessar began competing in the Top Dragster category at IHRA national events beginning at Maryland International Raceway in 2005. Over the past five years Bissessar has competed at various events on the Nitro Jam tour, but heading into this season he wasn't exactly sure how far sportsman racing could take him.

That is, of course, until he found out about the changes for the 2010 season.

Bissessar is the fastest sportsman in IHRA today.

Along with a brand new professional format, the International Hot Rod Association also decided to take its two quickest and fastest sportsman classes and give them the stage they deserve. Thus the Harland Sharp Elite 8 program was born.

Along with featuring the first round of Top Sportsman and Top Dragster eliminations during the professional rounds, IHRA also decided to bring back its popular Quick 8 program for the drivers in those classes to be run on the second day of competition.

And that, Bissessar admits, is something he simply could not pass up.

"Over the years Quick 8 racing has, for one reason or another, become a dying program leaving a void in racing for a lot of teams like us. It was a perfect fit for Aaron and myself; our specialty type of racing," said Bissessar. "We were basically in limbo at the end of 2009 trying to decide what kind of program of racing we would pursue in 2010. At first we were considering going TAD racing over at NHRA, but as soon as we saw the release on the Elite 8 we were hooked.

"We knew it would be a hit and a growing aspect of IHRA that we definitely wanted to participate in."

Already considered one of the fastest sportsman racers in the sport today, Bissessar traveled to the IHRA Nitro Jam season opener at Palm Beach International Raceway in late January with the goal of competing for his first national event win, but more importantly, walking away as the first ever Harland Sharp Elite 8 winner.

With the entire nation of Trinidad and Tobago watching, Bissessar began the weekend with the top qualifying spot, a 5.804 e.t. at 238.76 miles-per-hour, and plenty of confidence that this was his weekend.

He coasted to a first round bye on Friday, but trouble on Saturday threatened to end Bissessar's weekend much earlier than expected.

While performing his burnout early Saturday Bissessar's reverser locked up, ending his bid for a national event victory in only the second round. With the Elite 8 still ahead, Bissessar turned his disappointment into motivation as he and his crew began working on his dragster with the goal of coming back and winning the Saturday night feature.

Bissessar and his crew worked throughout the day getting ready for the Elite 8 showdown while on the track Mark Brown cruised to the Top Dragster victory over Charlie Cullotto.

Bissessar is determined to run the full Nitro Jam schedule.

With the stage finally set for the Harland Sharp Elite 8 moments after the first round of professional eliminations Bissessar rolled into the staging lanes in front of the largest crowd of his career and began his assault on the Top Dragster field.

The man known as the "Trinidad Rocket" dispatched of Daniel Seidel and Dean Brazell in the opening rounds before meeting Eddie Careccia in the final. Careccia, also considered one of the best in the business, knew he had a tough matchup in the final which may have played a role in his run as he left before the tree giving Bissessar the win and one of the proudest moments of his career.

Bissessar sets new record in dragster
T&T Newsday

SHELDON BISSESSAR, “The Trinidad Rocket”, for the second time consecutively this year, has dominated another International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) national event, this one in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The event was held on March 6 and 7 at State Capitol Raceway and titled the “Mardi Gras Nitro Jam”. This event boasted a sold out crowd and their southern hospitality was very evident.

Bissessar quickly became the crowd favorite with the constant cheers from the packed stands. He went into qualifying and emerged No 1 qualifier, also setting a new world record time of 5.78 seconds at 242 mph in the quarter mile.

Bissessar previously set this record on January 2010 at Palm Beach International Raceway, Florida with a time of 5.79 seconds at 238 mph. This new world record put him in a very strategic position going into the “Elite 8” championship.

Only the eight fastest Top Dragsters at the event can make it into the prestigious “Harlon Sharp Elite 8”.

The first rounds of elimination saw the “The Trinidad Rocket “ unopposed, posting a time of 5.84 seconds in the quarter mile at 240 mph giving him lane choice for round two.

Bissessar was not daunted by a horrific accident which occurred previous to his run. Alan Jones had a Top Dragster “blowover”. The dragster’s front wheels started up almost immediately and just kept rising until the wheelie bars collapsed, then the car went over backward and began tumbling and rolling down the track, taking a chunk out of the wall at 200 miles per hour.

Miraculously, Alan Jones escaped unhurt and after the IHRA Track Crew cleaned and prepared the track, Bissessar was ready for round 2.

The “Rocket” was up against Robert LeJeune. Sheldon knew that LeJeune needed a perfect light and a perfect run to win this round. This however did not happen. Sheldon left the start line with his trademark lightning quick reflexes and pulled away from LeJeune taking yet another win in a time of 5.82 seconds at 242 miles per hour. This win gave Bissassar lane choice for the final round.

The final round saw Sheldon up against John Angelle. Angelle faced a daunting task and he tried his best with a good light, but Bissessar was once again on time and had a commanding lead by the 330-foot marker, so Angelle unable to keep strides with “The Trinidad Rocket” gave up the race and Sheldon Bissessar took the coveted “Harlon Sharp Elite 8” championship.

At the end of the event,“The Trinidad Rocket” set a new International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Top Dragster world record in a time of 5.78 seconds at 242 mph and wins the “Elite 8” championship.

‘Trinidad Rocket’ sensational in US
Sunday, May 9 2010

SHELDON BISSESSAR, nicknamed “The Trinidad Rocket” scored a sensational victory in the recent 2010 IHRA Spring Nationals Nitro Jam at Rockingham Dragway, North Carolina in the USA.

This was Bissessar’s third consecutive win for the year after emerging champion at IHRA’s Palm Beach Nitro Jam, Palm Beach International Raceway Florida in January.

Not only did Bissessar win the event, but he also set the IHRA Top Dragster world record. Following this, in March, he reset this record and won the Mardi Gras Nitro Jam in Baton Rouge, Lousiana.

Last weekend, on May 1 and 2, Bissessar competed at the IHRA Spring Nationals Nitro Jam, Rockingham Dragway, North Carolina. Track conditions were not ideal as track temperatures soared above 130 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a very challenging racetrack surface for drivers.

'Rocket' Bissessar keeps on winning
Thursday, May 13th 2010

Sheldon Bissessar, ’The Trinidad Rocket’, claimed the 2010 IHRA Spring Nationals Nitro Jam at Rockingham Dragway, North Carolina, USA earlier this month.

This was Bissessar’s third consecutive win for the year after emerging champion at IHRA’s Palm Beach Nitro Jam at Palm Beach International Raceway in Florida in January, when he not only won the event, but also set the IHRA Top Dragster world record.

Following that effort, in March, he lowered the record and won the Mardi Gras Nitro Jam in Baton Rouge, Lousiana.

Bissessar competed at the IHRA Spring Nationals Nitro Jam in not so ideal conditions, as track temperatures soared above 130 degrees F, creating a very challenging, slippery surface for drivers.

Bissessar qualified in the No. 1 position going into the Elite 8 competition. This category saw 38 entrants but only the fastest eight would qualify and move forward.

In round one, Bissessar came up against James Leo, who was unable to make the call.

Unopposed, the ’Trinidad Rocket’ defied the heat and humidity to post a 5.98 seconds quarter-mile at 227 miles per hour to take the first round.

In round two, Bissessar faced off against Burwell Kendrick, claiming victory with a 6.0-second quarter-mile at 226.8 miles per hour.

Burwell was only able to manage a 6.5-second quarter-mile at 211 miles per hour. The loss put Burwell back in his trailer and had him heading home early.

In the finals, Bissessar fought off seasoned veteran Rob McKinley, crossing the finish line in 5.9 seconds for the quarter-mile event at 228 miles per hour.

McKinley had to settle for second place with a challenging 6.2-second quarter-mile at 217 miles per hour.

Bissessar now has three consecutive number one qualifying positions and three International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) National event wins.

‘Trinidad Rocket’ sizzles in Michigan drag racing
T&T Newsday

The IHRA Nothern Nitro Jam was held at US 131 Motorsports Park, Martin Michigan USA on August 13 and 14. This race meet's logistics were the tightest ever for the Trinidad Rocket Sheldon Bissessar who arrived at the track within one minute of the car being at the start line.

After missing his connecting flight to Michigan, Sheldon was forced to divert to Detroit take a two-hour taxi ride all the way to the racetrack just in time to suit up in the staging lanes and make the second qualifying round. This allowed the Rocket to have two blasts down the quarter- mile, for his first runs on the brand new Sipple chassis Top Dragster.

The car itself was finished with one day to spare before the travel deadline, after just three weeks of fabrication and assembly by Ironman Chassis specialist and Crew Chief Aaron Sipple.

The entire set-up is now lighter by over 125lbs. In theory, this should allow the supercharged, methanol-powered Top Dragster racecar to be quicker by 1/10th of a second.

In the process, a few things have changed for lighter components and on its maiden run the new car ran 6.5 at 218 mph on a mere quarter throttle opening. This was confirmed in reviewing the track photos of the qualifying passes and closer inspection revealed a broken throttle cable anchor. With a little help from the Top Fuel camp, the component was repaired and Sheldon was able to proceed into competition at full throttle.

After qualifying in the number three position and completing the mandatory First Round of Top Dragster dial-up, Bissessar won his first Elite 8 all-out elimination round easily when his opponent Ricky Adkins slowed immediately after launching with a finish time of 10.578 at 83 mph.

The Trinidad Rocket however was eager to see what the new car could do and ran a 5.998 at 226.35mph, the fastest and only five-second Top Dragster time of the entire meet. After qualifying number one, previous IHRA world record holder Troy Stone forfeited his place in Round 1 by leaving before the lights were activated, putting Rob McKinley into Round 2.

The launch pad was super-sticky and a few competitors struggled with the excess traction, with one racecar damaging drive-train components after experiencing what is called a “dead hook”. In this rare situation, the car launches so perfectly that the wheels hop up, land violently then launch forward.

Round two would see the Trinidad Rocket square off against McKinley who cut a brilliant 0.007 light against Bissessar's 0.058 giving him the lead at the start. Sheldon’s methanol-fueled supercharged Hemi tuned by Aaron Sipple came through for the PTRT team though as the Rocket caught McKinley at the 330-foot marker (about 1/3 of the way) and thundered on for a 6.004-second pass at 230.49 mph.

McKinley was no match posting a 6.426 at 213.54. It was a close call but an exciting win nonetheless in front of over 50,000 spectators at the Martin Michigan US131 Motorsports Park Dragway who showed up for their share of the IHRA racing action.

In the final round, Edward “Fast Eddie” Carrecia could not make it to the line due to an oil pressure drop on his engine and thanks to a Top Fuel oildown in the final round, Bissessar was declared winner without making the run, also winning the ProXtreme Dragster (PXD) Elite 8 challenge in the process.

This win represents a huge victory not just for Sheldon Bissessar but Ironman Chassis and ASE tuning for turning out a record-breaking racecar in such a short time.

Trinidad and Tobago is proud to have Sheldon Bissessar the Trinidad Rocket as a representative, demonstrating that even at a moment's notice he is ready to win.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Bissessar speeds to Indy triumph
Wednesday, July 13 2011

SHELDON BISSESSAR, dubbed the “Trinidad Rocket”, was victorious at the Ultimate Dragster Race at the world-famous NHRA Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States last Friday.

Bissessar stated, “I have always wanted to race at this facility since the beginning of my racing career.

“Winning a big race at our first time at Indy will always be remembered as a career highlight for me, my team and Trinidad and Tobago.”

On July 3, Bissessar and his Methanex/Total Lubricants-sponsored team had a strong performance during the semi-final phase, the Pro Top Outlaw Dragster Race — at the Dorchester Dragway in South Carolina.

He was allowed to make two test passes, in his Methanex Dragster, before the two qualifying rounds. After grabbing the Number Two qualifying spot, he battled veteran Michael McElwee in the semis, winning in a time of four seconds, at 190 miles-per-hour, while McElwee clocked 4.05 seconds.

At the finals, he faced off against the top-ranked qualifier Eddie Carecia.

The race turned out to be an anti-climatic one, as Carecia, trying to react faster than Bissessar, left before the starting lights were activated, and handed victory to Bissessar.

The TT driver also reset the Ultimate Dragster speed record with a trap speed of 190 miles-per-hour.

Bissessar and his Party Time Racing Team, which also included his chief Aaron Sipple of Ironman Chassis, later extended his gratitude to the sponsors Methanex, Total Lubricants, VP Racing Fuels, PSTL and the Ministry of Sport for their support.
