47 honoured at THA Sports Awards
By Kinnesha George Thursday, June 4 2015 (T&T Newsday)

THE TOBAGO House of Assembly (THA) has once again pledged its commitment to continue to support athletes in their efforts as, last Tuesday evening, a total of 47 Tobago sporting personalities were honoured by the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Division of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport.

The sports men and women, who represented the twin-island republic on various national sporting teams, were awarded at an appreciation ceremony at Café Coco, Crown Point.

Secretary of the Division Huey Cadette said the success of many of the island’s athletes sometimes go unrecognised.

“Sometimes our success goes unheralded,” he said. “At (2012) Carifta Games, we (Tobago) won four of six gold medals earned by Trinidad and Tobago. This year we have a record breaker Tyriq Horsford. We have Akeem Stewart who is world record holder as a paralympian.

“Kelton Thomas is a global body-building competitor and we have Keshorn Walker in rugby. Andi Montique won a World Masters 100m champion,” Cadette listed.

He continued that the island has been doing particularly well in the area of table tennis. “We have a situation where we have (national) table tennis teams going out of regional championships and the majority of the team is coming from Tobago,” Cadette said.

THA Director of Sports Theophilus Trim, in his remarks, encouraged the youngsters to be proud of their accomplishments and challenged them to aim at international achievement.

“If you are considered to be a national athlete it says that you have transcended the local scene and that you are good enough to compete at the other level. You should feel proud that you are among the best at what you do in the country of Trinidad and Tobago. Continue to strive for excellence. Continue to ensure that you stay motivated, that you stay on task and that you intend to move from national to international,” the Director emphasised.

Two-time Olympian Sherridan Kirk told the awardees to use the challenges of travelling to Trinidad to compete as a motivation.

“The struggles that we as Tobagonians have to go through and have been going through having to travel to Trinidad on a regular basis to compete,” said Kirk. “The nights when we are travelling, they (our competitors) are sleeping.

“The nights when we are looking for somewhere to stay they are in the comforts of their homes. It is only because of these struggles we are going to continue to succeed as Tobagonians and continue to do well for the country of Trinidad and Tobago,” Kirk admonished.

Kelton Thomas, right, receives the Chief Secretary Sportsman of the Year from Chief
Secretary Orville London at the 2014 THA Sports Awards

National woman footballer forward Kenya “Ya Ya” Cordner and national bodybuilder Kelton Thomas were named the Top Sportswoman and Sportsman in Tobago for 2014 at Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Sports Awards at the Gulf City Mall, Lowlands on Sunday.

Cordner took the women’s honours ahead of national netball standout Kemba Duncan and former World Championships bronze medallist Josanne Lucas. The petite Speyside-born player had an instrumental role in helping the Trinidad and Tobago’s women football team win the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) title at home at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo in September, 2014.

The Signal Hill Secondary graduate also led the charge for the Soca Princesses who just missed qualifying for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, going down 1-0 to Ecuador in the final qualifying match, also at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in December.

Cordner was absent for the Awards as she is currently representing T&T at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. Her mother, Cheryl Johnson, collected the Chief Secretary Sportswoman of the Year trophy and $13,000, both presented by the Chief Secretary Orville London. Duncan represented T&T at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland in 2014. Playing in the goal defence and goalkeeper positions, Duncan helped T&T to win the AFNA (Americas Federation of Netball Associations) title in Calgary, Canada.

Lucas was a finalist in the women’s 100m hurdles finals at the Commonwealth Games and finished fourth at the Central American Games (CAC) in Vera Cruz, Mexico.

Thomas got the nod over track and field selectees Akeem Stewart and Akanni Hislop. The 44-year-old won his sixth national title and also captured gold in the 70kg weight category and silver in the Master’s division at CAC Championships in St Martin.

On the international circuit, the Canaan resident was second at the British Grand Prix in Wales and recorded impressive top twenty finishes at the Arnold Europa Invitational in Spain (8th), the Arnold US Invitational (9th) and World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships (12th) in Brazil.

Thomas accepted the Chief Secretary Sportsman of the Year from Chief Secretary Orville London.  Stewart created history in 2014 when he broke the world record in the Paralympic F44 Men’s Shot Put event with a distance of 18.70m. The Carnbee-born competitor also holds the national men’s shot put record (19.34 in 2013) and won silver and bronze in the boys under 20 discus and shot put respectively at the 2011 Carifta Games.

Seventeen year-old Hislop was fourth in the boys under 18 200m finals at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China and copped gold in the 4x100m at the CAC Junior Championships in Vera Cruz, Mexico. The Bishop’s High School fifth former also won bronze in the 100m and 200m in Mexico. Hislop also copped the Top Secondary School Male Athlete of the Year honours, while Stewart took home the Athlete with Impairment Award.

Track and Field nominees dominated the awards as double Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon (Overseas-Based), Triple Carifta champion Chelsea James (Secondary School Female/Secondary Schools Female Student),  double CAC Junior gold medallist Andwuelle Wright (Secondary Schools Male Student), Janae De Gannes (Primary Schools Female/Primary School Student Female), veteran track and field coach Gerard Franklyn (Sports Icon) and Franklyn’s track club, Zenith (Sports Club) were all winners on the night.

National junior table tennis champions Derron Douglas (Primary School Male) and Messiah Walcott (Primary School Student) were also honoured.  Roxborough Police Youth copped the Sporting Community/Project of the Year category.

Table tennis coach Dexter Abbott walked away with the Coach of the Year trophy while president of the Tobago Basketball Zonal Commission, Keiron Mc Dougall, was voted the top Sports Administrator. Over $50,000 in prizes to Tobago’s top sports personalities and organisations were distributed at the return of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Sports Awards on Sunday evening.

The Gulf City Mall in Lowlands, Tobago was transformed as the event has once again returned, after an abrupt end in 2007. The Assistant Secretary in the Division of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport with direct responsibility for Sport, Assemblyman Jomo Pitt saw it fit to once again have a collaborative event that not only recognised the athletes but communities, coaches and administrative backing from which these athletes are nurtured. The period of consideration of nominee’s achievements was January 1 2014 - December 31 2014.

“I think it’s long overdue and years have gone by… the achievements of Tobagonians, the sporting achievements have been going unrecognised. That was noticeable on my part and I thought it best that we bring back such an event,” Pitt said.

At the end of the night, National female football forward Kenya “YaYa” Cordner took the women’s honours ahead of national netball standout Kemba Duncan and former World Championships bronze medallist Josanne Lucas.

National Bodybuilder Kelton Thomas got the nod over track and field selectees Akeem Stewart and Akanni Hislop for top Sportsman in Tobago for 2014. The Speyside-born Cordner was absent as she is currently representing TT at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

Her mother, Cheryl Johnson, collected the Chief Secretary Sportswoman of the Year trophy and $13,000 from THA Chief Secretary Orville London. Digicel joins THA to honour Tobago sporting success
Published: Thursday, July 16, 2015 (T&T Guardian)

Highlighting the continuous sporting success of Tobagonians, the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) held its awards ceremony themed 'Excellence: A Journey, Not A Destination' at the Atrium of the Gulf City Mall, Lowlands on Sunday.

Many from the sporting community gathered at the ceremony to honour 19 sporting categories including the Sporting Community of the Year and the Physically Challenged Athlete of the Year awards which were both proudly sponsored by the Digicel Foundation.

On hand to make the presentation and show her heartfelt gratitude was Digicel's Country manager for Tobago, Hazel Douglas, who commented, "The Digicel Foundation is always pleased to be associated with sport on the island and to reward and recognise outstanding performances in the community."

The event admired the island's sportsmen and women who contribute to the nation's sporting success with their outstanding performances in their various arenas. Akeem Stewart who broke a world record in Mexico last year when he won the gold medal in the men's shot put, was presented with the ParaAthlete award.

The Sporting Community award went to the Roxborough Police Youth Club—a young, vibrant club on the island, whose aim is to instill discipline in young people and to develop positive and healthy lifestyles while aiming to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the community.

The club has collected the Prime Minister's Award for Best Community Service, the Trinidad Express Youth Award and the THA's Best Youth Organisation, as well as the BPTT Youth in Education award.
