Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o may not play again this year after it was confirmed he has ruptured the meniscus in his right knee.

"He has suffered a tear to the outside of the meniscus in his right knee," announced club medico Ricard Pruna.

"Early indications point to a recovery period of between two and three months."

The Cameroon international sustained the injury while attempting a pass during Wednesday night's Champions League match with Werder Bremen.

Eto'o was carried off on a stretcher in the 65th minute of the match in Germany and the initial diagnosis of the injury by Barcelona doctor Ricard Pruna has now been confirmed by an MRI scan.

Pruna, who said the injury occurs when there is a sudden change of direction of the knee, commented at the time that "if this diagnosis is confirmed, he could be out for between two and three months".

The 25-year-old is definitely out of the next two Champions League Group A games against Chelsea and looks unlikely to feature again for the Catalan giants until after the winter break.

Eto'o, who suffered a similar injury in 2005, will now undergo arthroscopic treatment on Thursday afternoon at the Clinica del Pilar in Barcelona.

ripping the meniscus eh nice at all...exactly the same thing i did to myself but it depends where is ripped...If it is on the inside where they can shave it down it not too too bad...but probably it is the same thing as i had where yuh rip more to the back and they cant shave it down....that surgery hurt no tail!!! move yuh knee a millimeter and yuh waan scream in pain  and reaaaal rehab but i sure barca go fix him good and proper
bess of luck in de recovery

he is out for 5 months definitely...real hard luck. I go miss see him terrorizing defences.

hopefully Rijkaard opts for Saviola over Gudjonsen as main striker

T&T welcomes back...the King

Do Barca need to loan more strikers? I figure with Messi, Gudjonsen and Saviola available does it really make sense?

Ballack will renew Ronaldinho's fear of germans........lol.

The only man we fraid is Messi (messiah).

Without Eto'o speed, chelsea wining this group and barcelona have to hope for second, otherwise they will be favorites for the UEFA Cup......lol
