Gold for Cedenio, James as T&T wins nine medals on day one
Published: Monday, April 21, 2014
Clayton Clarke (T&T Guardian)

Machel Cedenio copped T&T’s first gold medal of the 43rd annual Carifta Games at the Pierre Aliker Municipal Stadium in Fort de France, Martinique, on Saturday. Cedenio crossed the line in 45.95 to hold on to the 400-metres title he won one year ago in the Bahamas.

Cedenio blasted out of the blocks to finish well ahead of Jamaica’s Nathon Allen (46.97). Compatriot Asa Guevera was third in 47.35, edging out Ivan Henry (Jamaica) 47.36.

Speaking after the triumph, Cedenio said he was happy with his performance. “ I felt good and I am satisfied with my run. I am just aiming to run fast this year. This is my last Carifta so I came here to have fun. (Defending my title) was a good accomplishment.”

Cedenio has been out of action since the Carifta trials due to an injury. “I was hurt after the Carifta trials so I did some rehab and I am good now so I will do more races.”

Chelsea James was the other gold-medal winner, taking the girls under 18 shot-put, the final event of the day. James pushed the iron ball out to 16.12, a personal best and close to two metres ahead of Janel Fullerton of Jamaica (14.41) and another T&T athlete Akidah Briggs (13.79).

James improved on her previous best of 15.38m set at the Falcon Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium last week. James’ golden effort was her second medal of the day, after she secured silver in the discus in the morning session, the first for the national contingent at the Games. She notched another personal best of 43.53 behind Fullerton (46.47) and ahead of another Jamaican, Devia Brown (43.31).

Portious Warren collected bronze in the girls under-20 shot-put (12.70).

T&T athletes collected nine medals on the first day. Aaliyah Telesford and Nicholas Landeau were silver medallists, while Jonathan Farinha added a bronze in the boys under-20 100m.

Telesford took silver in the girls under-20 100m in a wind-aided clocking of 11.42, as Jamaican Jonielle Smith sped to gold in 11.17, with another Jamaican, Kedisha Dallas, taking third (11.44). Kayelle Clarke was fifth (11.51). Landeau had to settle for second in the boys under-20 1,500m, clocking 3:58.27. Farinha blazed to bronze in the final event of the night, clocking a personal best of 10.27, as favourite Jevaughn Minzie of Jamaica roared to victory in 10.18, second ahead of Barbadian Levi Cadogan (10.25). Micah Ballantyne finished down the field in seventh (10.67).

Ayoka Cummings missed out on a podium finish in the girls under-20 400m, taking fourth place in 56.83 as reigning World Junior silver medallist Kadecia Baird of Guyana was first to the line, denying the Jamaican pair of Dawnlee Loney (53.90) and Yanique McNeil (54.49). Shirnel Ettienne was seventh (58.10).

Waithe, Roberts strike gold!
By Kwame Laurence Fort-de-France
Story Created: Apr 21, 2014 at 12:03 AM ECT (T&T Express)

Kevin Roberts secured gold for Trinidad and Tobago in the boys’ octathlon, on day two of the 2014 Carifta Games, here in Fort de France, Martinique, late yesterday.
Shakeil Waithe also earned a title for T&T just before press time, hurling the spear 67.57 metres for top spot in the boys’ under-20 javelin.
Bahamian Denzel Pratt (64.55m) and Kittitian Adrian Williams (64.49m) earned silver and bronze, respectively, while the other T&T thrower in the field, Aaron Enile finished sixth with a 56.38m effort.
Ruebin Walters repeated as bronze medallist in the boys’ under-20 400m hurdles, the T&T athlete getting home in a personal best 51.68 seconds.
Okeen Williams topped the field in 50.99, forcing his fellow-Jamaican Marvin Williams to settle for silver in 51.22.
The other T&T athlete in the race, Aaron Lewis clocked 55.85 to finish eighth.
‘’Coming out of the semi-finals,’’ Walters told the Express, ‘’I had a slight muscle cramp. But I still came out and competed on it. I’m very happy and thankful for my performance today.’’
Walters will bid for a second medal in today’s 110m hurdles.
‘’That’s my better race. I look forward to the 110 hurdles much more than the 400-metre hurdles…going to be a showdown.’’
Jeminise Parris returned a time of one minute, 02.22 seconds for fourth spot in the girls’ under-18 400m hurdles. And in the girls’ under-20 one-lap hurdles, Antonia Attale was seventh in 1:07.51.
On Saturday, Chelsea James completed a hat-trick of Carifta shot put triumphs.
Winner of the girls’ under-17 shot put competition in 2012 and again in 2013, James added the first ever under-18 title to her collection with a big 16.12m throw.
The Tobago athlete dominated her rivals. Her closest challenger, Jamaican silver medallist Janel Fullerton produced a best effort of 14.42m.
The other spot on the podium went to Akidah Briggs, the T&T athlete securing bronze with a 13.79m throw.
There were a couple medals for T&T in the 100m events.
Aaliyah Telesford picked up silver in the girls’ under-20 century in a wind-assisted 11.42 seconds. She finished between two Jamaicans, Jonielle Smith striking gold in 11.17 and Kedisha Dallas bagging bronze in 11.44.
The other T&T sprinter in the race, Kayelle Clarke clocked 11.51 to cop fifth spot.
In the boys’ under-20 100m final, Farinha got to the line in 10.27 seconds to bag bronze, behind Jamaican Jevaughn Minzie, the gold medallist in an impressive 10.18, and Barbadian Levi Cadogan (10.25).
Farinha’s teammate, Micah Ballantyne got to the line in 10.67 to finish seventh.
The boys’ under-18 100m final was re-run, yesterday. Raheem Chambers and Waseem Williams finished one-two for Jamaica, clocking 10.27 and 10.33, respectively. Bahamian Javan Martin (10.54) finished third. T&T sprinter Akanni Hislop clocked 10.75 for fifth spot, while his teammate, Adell Colthrust was sixth in 10.79.
Marielle Pierre finished fourth in yesterday’s girls’ under-20 discus with a 39.48m throw.
Terry Frederick won the opening heat in one minute, 59.18 seconds to qualify automatically for today’s boys’ under-18 800m final. His T&T teammate, Jeremiah Hamilton was eliminated after finishing fourth in heat three in 2:00.22.
Boys’ under-20 1500m silver medallist Nicholas Landeau will face the starter in the 800m final. He finished second in heat one in 1:53.73 to progress automatically.
Ashton Gill, however, was eliminated, his 1:56.79 clocking in finishing fourth in heat two proving too slow for a ‘’fastest loser’’ championship race berth. In Saturday’s 1500m, Gill was seventh in 4:07.51.
In the girls’ under-18 800m final, T&T will be represented by Je-Risa James, who finished fourth in heat one in 2:20.08 to book a spot as a “fastest loser”.
And Elia Nero, seventh in Saturday’s girls’ under-20 1500m in 5:10.83, will battle for two-lap honours today.
T&T earned nine medals on day one, and at press time, yesterday, had added three more for a total of 12 --four gold, three silver, and five bronze.

If all our T&T athletes who are active today can medal then we will add 17 more medals to our total of 16—(four gold, four silver, and eight bronze) at end of yesterday. lets hope we can attain at least a total of 30 medals by the end of today with at least 10 of them being gold which means we need to win at least 6 more gold medals today.

What splits does that youth normally run? Looked a very flat contribution.

His leg was the weak link in that relay, if he could have maintained his position we would have won silver and be much closer to the Jamaica on the last leg.

Maybe John Constantine is being highly overrated in T&T, who knows?

Hopefully Jeminise can medal this evening and make up for her disappointment in not medalling in the 400m Hurdles final and defending her Carifta title which she won last year.

What's with the girls team.
I think they need more regular top class relay competition plus possibly better coaching and training.
Anyway, they are in the Final this evening so lets see how they do.

CARIFTA 2014 DAY 3 UPDATES
Shot put silver for Williams

By Kwame Laurence in Fort de France
Story Created: Apr 21, 2014 at 1:58 PM ECT (T&T Express)

UPDATE 1:

Kenejah Williams took Trinidad and Tobago’s medal tally at the 2014 Carifta Games, here in Fort de France, Martinique, to 17, with a 16.55 metres throw in today’s boys’ under-20 shot put.

Williams earned silver in the event, behind Jamaican Demar Gayle (16.72m) and ahead of Barbadian Romario Antoine (16.42m).

Asha James was fourth in the girls’ under-20 javelin with a 37.91m effort. The other T&T athlete in the event, Akidah Briggs threw  37.19m to finish fifth. Dominica’s Shanee Angol won with a big 49.66m hurl.

Going into the final session of Carifta 2014, T&T have four gold medals, five silver and eight bronze.

Later today, T&T will chase precious metal in the sprint hurdles, 800m, 200m and 4x400m events, and will also battle for honours in the boys’ under-20 5,000m, boys’ under-18 long jump, boys’ under-20 discus and girls’ under-20 javelin.

Based on Kwame Laurence report just above we have the potential to win 10 medals in this evening's session and hopefully a few of them are going to be gold especially in case of our U-20 Boys 4 x 400m Relay Team that includes Cedenio.

It would be nice for T&T to end on at least 27 medals this evening with at least 8 of them being gold which will mean we would have bettered our performance at last year's Carifta Games when we won a total of 20 medals with 8 being gold, 2 being silver and 10 being bronze.

What a race in the girls hurdles ... Valiant effort by Bim for gold, and to think this was not her pet event. The talent in the race for me doh was the Guadeloupean ... although bronze, if yuh break that race down technically, she could with refinement bring something to the table.

EDIT: Just realized she's at Kansas State ... wonder what the breakdown on the Yard squad is like in terms of domestic v college.

On several Jamaican victories, the notable thing is not merely the wins, but just how comprehensive they are ...

Hearty congrats to the medalists. Ah!  Got the stream. Long jump going on. I think our performance is totally unacceptable. Poor. We are not novice in this competition. 52 to 18. Poor! poor! poor!
