McLeod: Turn Guanapo church into jail
Sascha Wilson
Published: 21 May 2010
Sascha Wilson
People’s Partnership candidate for Pointe-a-Pierre, Errol McLeod, has hinted that if it is proven state funds were used to build the controversial church on the Heights of Guanapo, it would be turned into a jail, if the party comes into power.
Speaking Wednesday night at a political meeting at Palmiste Park, McLeod said: “We are being told that the jails are filled to capacity. “I am sure one of the projects that seriously needs investigating is the Guanapo project, and when we find out for sure, when we confirm that indeed the building for Guanapo was credited to the palace, we are going to spend another $20 to $30 million to put jail facilities in Guanapo,” he said.

He also said they would put legislation, if necessary, to ensure migrant labourers were not employed at the expense of local workers and labourers. He also said they were committed to taking to opening training facilities for youths. He said there was a large percentage of the work force which were unskilled. “T&T used to supply welders, as we supply oil men, to Saudia Arabia. They were trained right here.”

Steups this party is ALL about the country ent...First the prime minister's residence going to be turned into an orphanage, now this clown talking about turning some church into a jail...They not ready yet..

not some church but a church that is alleged to be financed by state funds

Why these pollsters not giving us any real numbers for each constituency. I keep hearing who leading or too close to call, but no numbers.

i have a question.. can a political party use state resources for election campaigning?

because i getting first hand reports of people getting calls from private numbers asking for them by name, then asking if they will be voting back PNM in power.

then friends of mine getting letters in the mail from candidate addressing them by name and talking to them as youth obviously knowing their ages. where do they get this info?

How dey get d priest credit card info? Somebody give dem so no different than when dey get yuh name 4 other purposes. Right here we had a thread wit peeps address and what constituency d in. How difficult is it for somebody at TSTT to give out peeps number and askin dem who dey votin for.

Y it have 2 b state funds?

Interesting read here from Selwyn Ryan.. http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/nart?id=161672448&weba=NWSOpinion

Quote
The church on the hill and public integrity
Selwyn Ryan
Friday, May 21st 2010

Integrity - who has or does not have it - featured prominently in the election discourse. This preoccupation was sparked by the UDeCOTT Inquiry and Mr Manning’s refusal to distance himself from Mr Hart on the ground that the proper thing to do was to wait until the Commission had submitted its report. There was, however, widespread suspicion that there was more in the mortar than the pestle.

But the imperatives of the election campaign and the publication of documents sourced by the COP from the Malaysian authorities which indicated that Mr Hart had a case of perjury to answer prompted the Prime Minister to try and put some distance between himself and Mr Hart.

As he declared on the campaign trail, ’I cannot support breaches of integrity in the Government or anywhere else, and I don’t.

The one thing people know about me is that I stand for integrity and I have always stood for integrity in the conduct of public affairs. And the minute anybody breaches the codes of conduct and standards of integrity that are expected of persons in public office, they stand on their own. And if they have a case to answer, we will ensure that they have a fair trial and they will answer before the courts’.

Mr Manning’s behaviour in respect of UDeCOTT, however, suggests that there was some dark reason why he was reluctant to fire Hart or ask him to fall on his sword. He claimed, somewhat disingenuously, in a controversial ’interview’, that Mr Hart was attracting unfair and undeserved public criticism because he was a member of the PNM. He however conceded that Mr Hart may have done certain things without paying sufficient attention to process, and that he may have ’cut corners’ to get certain projects completed.

What you think funding all the Vision 2020 ads and the ads for all the under fire ministries that suddenly started popping up after election call?

What is amazing about this entire campaign from the PNM's point of view, is the complete and utter unrepentance vis a vis all allegations and proven instances of highhandedness, corruption, and demonstrated disdain for the rule of law and the concerns of the citizens of this country.

There has been no "Stay the course, we will correct the errors" or "We love you so we will try harder"

Just off the top of my head, UDECOTT and the church aside you have Enill questioning the people's right to have the information about the awarding of the public work contract AFTER IT WAS EXPRESSEDLY RULED that it should be divulged under the FOIA.

You have the decision to put up first , "the berm" to block off the Beetham squalor from Obama, Elizabeth and co and then the "security" walls, being made unilaterally and without any consultation

You have Marlene McDonald promising to explain about the Ministry of Culture bursaries, ducking out of it, and then promising to explain about it again AFTER the elections.

You have Manning pulling out files on Villafana in Parliament, telling the Opposition Leader that he has people watching her, Colm (who has no capacity to comment on the matter whatsoever) claiming the hit on Kamla to be a hoax (while the matter is under police investigation), Manning claiming to have been informed by the police of such (while the matter is under police investigation), Sarawatsingh telling Villafana to "Stop making a fool of himself because he is 81 years old" for exercising his constitutional right to express his political opinion.

This must be really PNM country. Cause it ent mine, that's for sure.

There are two parties going up for election.
One party has been in power for the last eight years~. And most if all would tend to agree that present course that nation has taken is not the right one.... and we must change. The second party going up for election formed the government for ~ 6 years prior before the current party came to power. Now this party had a checkered tenure in gov't and is accused of some underhand act ivies very similar to what the current govt is being accused off.
It is safe to say that both parties are less than desirable. However the party in opposition has elected a new leader and claims to be offering an avenue for change, yet their manifesto does not show how this change is going to come about.
So now comes the decision should I vote for the existing gov't,  some would call them lesser of two evils, even though I disagree with their policies, the same policies will continue if they are elected.
Or should I vote for the party who has plans I know little off?
Should we  tend to gravitate towards the opposition despite the unanswered questions on their policies.  Because we don't want 5 more years of the existing gov't and their policies.  Choose the promise of something different, a promise that may end up broken.
Is it possible to think of one’s  vote not as an endorsement for one,  but instead the disapproval of the other?
