yeah lot of americans/american soccer fans think the US is much bigger than they actually are, reasons include reaching several world cups in a row, beating spain in the confederations cup, reaching the confed final and leading brazil 2-0, winning their world cup group that included England, fifa world ranking, etc.  these are just a few reasons.

Still a far cry feeling we're "big like germany, brazil, spain, etc" as you claimed. And anyone who feels that way is certainly in a minority.

nothing wrong with aspiring to be that level, but thinking you are on that level can be detrimental.  for example, we think we on the same level as cost rica, jamaica, panama, etc and as a result we suffer when we play those teams since we overestimate ourselves.

Except that you're basing your viewpoint on a fallacy: practically no one in the U.S. feels that we're on the same level as Germany, Brazil, Spain, etc.

This is getting ridiculous now! Sell him because he try to do a backheel?

That article was written by Paul Parker; I wonder if he also has it in for Balo because he's black.

Time for City to show Balotelli the door

Mario Balotelli's latest bout of bad behaviour has laid down the gauntlet for Roberto Mancini to prove his worth as a manager and deal with what is becoming a real problem for Manchester City. As far as I am concerned, the best way he can do that is to sell the player and rid his squad of a damaging element. However, they might struggle to find a buyer.

Mancini was right to substitute Balotelli immediately after his ridiculous showboating against LA Galaxy on Sunday and most managers would have done the same. You would expect the player to understand why he had been taken off, hang his head in shame and apologise.

Is Mario Balotelli a lost cause?

This preseason was shaping up nicely for Mario Balotelli. The Manchester City player's main strike partner, Carlos Tevez, is desperately trying to secure a move away from Eastlands, and while Sergio Aguero is rumored to be City's main transfer target, Balotelli is positioned as a player who could become critical to his team's attack. Indispensable, even.

But as we've learned with Balotelli, you must expect the unexpected. And so it was that on Sunday, when Manchester City took on the Los Angeles Galaxy in the World Football Challenge, Super Mario did it again. Perhaps he watches too many YouTube videos. Maybe, like many impressionable kids, he saw something that he deemed cool and decided to emulate it. That was the impression I was left with after Balotelli tried to backheel a ball into the back of the net.

American teenager Villyan Bijev signs with Liverpool FC

American teenager Villyan Bijev agreed to terms with English club giant, Liverpool FC, over the weekend, according to a report from KMPH Fox 26 out of Fresno, Calif. The report indicated that Bijev signed a three-year contract with a two-year option. Bijev’s high school coach and former MLS midfielder Chad McCarty confirmed the information to the television station.

The striker avoided the notoriously difficult work permit issue of English soccer via his Bulgarian citizenship. Villyan’s father, Chris, was born in the eastern European nation and now is a renowned attorney in Northern California for immigration and nationality issues.

The latest blog entry from Bill Archer at BigSoccer:

Stick a Fork in Jack Warner

Because if Blatter is to cling to any kind of legitimacy, it will be because he makes enough noise and smoke about "reform" and "corruption", a position which looks insincere if not ludicrous as long as he has Jack Warner sitting next to him.

Long before the election campaign, it was widely thought that Warner was Blatters' biggest problem and the speculation was that the Old Swiss Codger would dearly love to rid himself of the constant embarrassment if only he could.

Well now he can.

Qatar's Bin Hammam accused of buying 2022 World Cup

Suspended Fifa vice-president Jack Warner has made public an e-mail that claims Mohamed Bin Hammam "bought" the 2022 World Cup finals for Qatar. The e-mail, seemingly from Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke, also questions why Asian confederation chief Bin Hammam was running for Fifa president.

Valcke wrote: "[Hammam] thought you can buy Fifa as they bought the World Cup". Fifa suspended Warner and Bin Hammam over separate allegations of bribery, pending further investigation.

Another great blog entry on the subject from Bill Archer at BigSoccer:

Arrogance, Greed and the Crisis at FIFA

Are you seeing a pattern here?

These exact same guys keep doing the exact same stuff year after year, decade after decade, and they don't stop even when they've been caught red handed.

They're the most openly shameless bunch of guys maybe in history. They're exactly like streetcorner whores: getting nabbed by the cops every once in a while is considered the price of doing business. Their only concern is how quickly they can get processed and bonded so they can get back out there and go on whoring.

Porto, Europe's best-run club

Porto may be Europe's most best-run club. Playing this season in Portugal's Superliga and the Europa League, the high-scoring Dragons don't generate lots of attention. But they won the Superliga without losing a game and by a record margin of 21 points and captured the Europa League with a 1-0 win over fellow Portuguese club Braga on Wednesday. On top of that, high-scoring Porto continues to be one of the most successful clubs on the international transfer market.

Porto has made a profit of more than $300 million on transfers in the last nine years.

Busquets cleared to play for Barcelona in Wembley final

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets can play in the Champions League final against Manchester United after being cleared of racial abuse. Uefa has dismissed claims by Barca's Spanish rivals Real Madrid that Busquets racially insulted full-back Marcelo during their semi-final tie.

A statement on Barca's website read: "Uefa has rejected the complaint filed by Real Madrid." Busquets is now free to line up against United at Wembley on Saturday 28 May.

Uefa charges Sergio Busquets over racism claim

Uefa has launched a disciplinary case against Barcelona's Sergio Busquets over alleged racism in the Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid.

Real posted a video on their website before the second leg showing Busquets allegedly calling full-back Marcelo "mono" (monkey) in the first leg.

The case will be heard on Sunday with a decision due the next day.

Real Madrid accuse Busquets of racism

Real Madrid have released video footage appearing to show Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets calling Marcelo a "monkey".

The club released footage on their in-house TV channel with Busquets captioned as shouting 'mono, mono' at Marcelo during Barca's 2-0 Champions League victory at the Bernabeu last week.

Madrid, who had earlier released a video claiming to show Pepe made no contact with Dani Alves during the red-card incident, also provided video analysis of referee Frank De Bleeckere, who will take charge of Tuesday's semi-final second leg at Barcelona.

Real Madrid-Barcelona, what they cost ...

Real Madrid and Barcelona, which meet Saturday in La Liga action (TV: Gol TV, ESPN Deportes, ESPN3.com, live, 4 pm ET), have taken decidedly different approaches to building their powerhouse teams.

According to report by the Daily Telegraph, Real Madrid spent more on signing Cristiano Ronaldo ($136 million) than Barcelona did on its projected starting XI ($123 million).

Real Madrid should start only one youth product (goalie Iker Casillas), while Barcelona will start eight players (including Gerard Pique, who later moved to Manchester United) from its famed youth academy, La Masia.

Paraguay beats USA 1-0 in friendly

The Americans remain winless this year in three games. Still, coach Bob Bradley sees playing two games within four days as good preparation for the CONCACAF Gold Cup this June.

"We really hadn't had a good chance to be together with most of our core guys since the World Cup," Bradley said Tuesday night after Oscar Cardozo's 18th-minute goal gave Paraguay a 1-0 exhibition win.

"So this is important as far as refocusing ourselves, building on the things that we've done but having an understanding now of what things need to be a little different ... what's going to stay the same, what's going to be different. When you get together after a lot of months just seeing form wise where everybody is."

Yes. He was a decent forward at youth level, but it didn't take very long to see his deficiencies at that position once he got to MLS (with the Galaxy), so he was moved to right back, where (I believe) he's been ever since.

Balotelli caught throwing darts
March 27, 2011
By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

Manchester City are to hold a meeting on Monday to discuss Mario Balotelli's disciplinary issues after he was caught throwing darts from a first-floor window.

Balotelli said in The People that he threw the darts in the direction of youth players because he was "bored". Nobody was hurt during the incident and ESPNsoccernet has been informed that the club view the incident as a misguided prank rather than a serious transgression.

However, Balotelli has continued to attract negative press since leaving Inter in the summer and was fined two weeks' wages for his dismissal in the Europa League game against Dynamo Kiev. Roberto Mancini held the forward responsible for City's failure to overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first leg and described his actions as "stupid".

ESPNsoccernet understands that Mancini was not aware of this latest incident on Sunday morning as he had been away from the club, but there was due to be a conversation between the board and the manager on Monday to bring him up to speed.

A club spokesman said: "The matter will be dealt with internally."

Young Agudelo trends upward in U.S. draw against Argentina

In the journalism world, one of the rules you often hear is this: Three examples qualifies as a trend. And we now have three examples that 18-year-old U.S. forward Juan Agudelo is a promising forward to watch at the international level.

Agudelo played in his third U.S. game here Saturday night, coming on as a second-half substitute and scoring the equalizing goal in a 1-1 tie against a full-strength Argentina. It was an opportunist's strike, cleaning up the garbage by knocking in a rebound from Carlos Bocanegra's set-piece header. But it was also the third example we have seen that Agudelo can add energy to a game and contribute goals.
