Team won by default versus the ill-fated Kenyans and loss 3-0 to France. However, lots of hockey yet to be played through the rounds.
The squad is a U21 team playing in a tourney that is not a per se U21 tournament. In observing the team, I found several playing characteristics that are reflected in some of our (junior) footballers (lack of concentration, failure to read the game (or lack of will to move in anticipation of predictable passes until the pass is actually executed) - even in situations and moments that are replicated time and time again in the opponent's attacking movement. Notwithstanding this, it is encouraging to see a coach embrace a development and exposure policy.
The skipper (number 11, Lewis) was vocal and exuded several laudable leadership qualities. Saw her take the initiative to bear some of the weight in defence when one of her teammates was struggling physically. Overall, she did not complain and tried to deal with each challenge as presented.
With even a modest but consistent level of investment, T&T hockey can thrive significantly. I was encouraged by several items I learned and observed. Decision-making stakeholders, please note accordingly.
