Mucurapo face potential relegation over “illegal player”; Fatima, Pleasantville could benefit

Oh, how quickly things can change. Less than a fortnight ago, East Mucurapo Secondary were one of three schools to escape relegation from the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division on the final day of the season.

Trinidad and Tobago National Under-17 player, Jesse Williams, scored twice in a 2-1 win over Fyzabad Secondary on 26 October 2016, which should have secured Mucurapo’s place in the top flight of the 2017 competition.

However, a successful protest by St Benedict’s College over Mucurapo’s use of defender Abdus Ramcharan might undo the latter school’s good work on the field and could have far reaching implications on the league standings and the identities of the bottom three.

SSFL assistant secretary Gerald Elliot Elliot explained the matter.

Hackshaw and Orr star as Trinity/E edge Malick to join promoted Carapichaima and Speyside

Guess who’s back? Carapichaima East Secondary, Trinity College East and Speyside Secondary each claimed a promotion spot in the SSFL Championship Big 5 Play Off yesterday to return to the Premier Division for the 2017 season.

All three schools were relegated at the end of the 2015 season with Carapichaima East and Speyside both falling on the the last day while Trinity East suffered a record 13 losses. But what goes down must come back up.

Yesterday in Trincity, new Trinity East coach Michael Grayson could scarcely contain his joy.

“It’s a great, great feeling [to win promotion],” Grayson told Wired868. “It was a challenge. They got demoted last year and it’s not easy losing 14, 15 games. That’s a lot of losing. To change that was our first objective, and we did it.”

Grayson and his “Blue Hawks” conjured up a 2-1 win over a plucky Malick Secondary team on a swamp-like surface in Trincity while Speyside and Carapichaima played to a goalless stalemate.

Carapichaima already secured promotion by sauntering to three victories in their opening three Play Off matches. However Malick’s final day defeat was the missing ingredient in Trinity and Speyside’s promotion chase.

The identity of the three teams they will replace seems considerably less straightforward due to a recent ruling involving East Mucurapo Secondary, with Fatima College, Pleasantville Secondary, Queen’s Royal College, San Juan North and East Mucurapo all in danger of falling through the trap door.

There were fewer twists but no shortage of tackles on a muddy, waterlogged field in Trincity, which added extra spice to a do or die fixture.

Speyside, Trinity through to Inter Col semis
T&T Guardian

Speyside High School and Trinity College East advanced to the semi final of the Coca Cola Inter Col yesterday after recording victories over Pentecostal Light and Life and Five Rivers Secondary.

At Mt Pleasant in the sister isle of Tobago, the Tobago Championship Division winners signalled a warning to opponents in the semis by demolishing Pentecostal Light and Life 8-0, courtesy the commanding performances of under-14 standouts Deleon Beckles who scored a double and Nicholas Sanchez, who added one in the victory.

However their performances were overshadowed by a hat-trick from Kerri Mc Donald, continuing his goalscoring touch that earned them promotion to the Premier Division next season. His three goals were followed by single items from Cel Toppin and Dillon Beckles.

At the El Dorado East Secondary, Trinity College also benefited from a hat-trick from Liam Burns in thrashing Five Rivers 5-0. Having been beaten on the two occasions the teams met in the championship division, Five Rivers produced little resistance as Trinity got two more goals to seal the win from Christian Ransome and Dwight Yorke to confirm their spot in the semis to be played next week.

St Augustine Secondary also booked a place in the semis by hammering Toco 10-0 at the Henry Street Recreation Ground Arouca. A hat-trick from Anthony Samuels and a double from Kenton James spearheaded their win.

St Augustine, known as the ‘Green Machine’ were rampant through-out the encounter and confirmed the victory with Rahim Gordon, Zion Holder, Ryan Phillips and Akeem Hosten’s goals.

Naps, Fyzo, Tigers advance in Intercol
By Rachael Thomspon-King (T&T Guardian)

Naparima College, Fyzabad Secondary and St Anthony’s College booked their spots in the semifinals of their respective zones in th Coca Cola Inter Col football competition, yesterday.

Down at Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin in South Zone action, Naparima showed no mercy against Moruga Secondary, crushing them 7-1 in the second match of a double-header. In the opening match-up, Fyzabad Secondary secured a 3-1 victory over Pleasantville to progress to the next round.

It was another one-sided affair in the North with St Anthony’s whipping Fatima College, 5-0, with all five goals coming in the second half in the quarterfinal match at St Mary’s ground in Port-of-Spain.

Prolific scorer Isaiah Lee was on target with three goals for Naparima, opening the scoring in the sixth minute. He followed up with his second in the 26th. Justin Sadoo joined Lee on the scoresheet and got “Naps” third item in the 31st. Seven minutes later, Renaldo Francois put in another, to give Naparima a 4-0 advantage at the half.

The rampage continued into the second session with Judah St Louis finding the back in the 51st.

Kevin Feeling was able to give Moruga something to celebrate when he netted his team’s lone goal in the 54th.

Lee’s third came in the 67th before Jeremiah Kesar sunk Naparima’s final item in the 76th.

Earlier, David Jones netted a brilliant opener for Fyzabad within seconds of the start of the match. His captain Sharkeel Louison added to the score and gave Fyzabad a 2-0 lead at the halfway mark. On the resumption, Jabari Hodge lessened Pleasantville’s deficit to one as his team searched for an equaliser. However, Nashorn Simon dampened that hope by producing Fyzabad’s third item in the 70th minute and that is how it stayed, when time expired.

Che Benny connected a double to see St Anthony’s College into the semifinals, lifting his team past Fatima College with the impressive 5-0 victory.

The first session remained goalless despite a number of attempts on both ends of the field. However, the script changed in the second half when the “Westmoorings Tigers” rediscovered their form and roared past Fatima with ease, thanks to Benny’s pair of goals and one each from N’Kosi Salandy, Kreshon Alexander and Kathon St Hilliare.

Tigers ‘trump’ Fatima
« Reply #163 on: November 10, 2016, 09:14:57 AM »
Tigers ‘trump’ Fatima
By Garth Wattley (T&T Express)

St Anthony’s College did a Donald Trump yesterday.

They won their Coca-Cola InterCol quarter-final clash with Fatima College with more ease than seemed would be the case initially, as did the United States’ new president-elect in Monday’s elections. But following a goalless first half, Che Benny’s 11-minute hat-trick powered them to a 5-0 victory and a North Zone semi-final meeting with East Mucurapo Secondary next week.

The “Tigers” were not the day’s hungriest team however, since national champions Naparima College downed Moruga Secondary 7-1 in a South Zone quarter-final.

In the first match of a double header at Mahaica Oval, Fyabad Secondary beat Pleasantville Secondary 3-1. They will now meet Shiva Boys Hindu College in one South Zone semi-final.

At St Mary’s ground, the final result was hard on Fatima — already demoted from the Premier Division — who battled gallantly in the first half, defending desperately, while also benefitting from some sloppy St Anthony’s finishing. Fatima also had a penalty claim for hand-ball denied and came close to taking the lead themselves through a Liam De Verteuil effort that was cleared off the line near the end of the first period.

To that point, the match seemed to be following the pattern of St Benedict’s College’s 1-0 upset of the St Anthony’s “Tigers” in the Premier Division, that sparked that southern side’s great escape from relegation.

But Benny, a constant threat to the Fatima defence with his dribbling, finally found a cutting edge to his game early in the second period, as Fatima lost their discipline, defender Joshua Pierre in particular.

He upended the elusive Benny with a hand to his face that earned him a first yellow card, and more crucially, gave Benny a chance to take a free kick just outside the 18-metre box, which he curled low into the left-hand corner of goalkeeper Jacob Camacho’s net in the 52nd minute.

The floodgates on a wet afternoon were opened, and Benny “soaked” Fatima further with another free kick six minutes later and a shot from a central position inside the “18”, after he had shifted one defender to make room in the 63rd.

Benny’s partner in crime in the Tigers attack, Kathon St Hillaire added a fourth in the 79th, by which time Fatima were feeling the hurt.

Pierre, then added to that pain when he earned himself a second yellow and an ejection for a rash challenge on St Anthony’s skipper Jules Lee, who was given a straight red for retaliation.

Both sides were now down to 10 men, but Fatima were in far worse shape and a Tigers substitute added to their misery with an 84th minute item.
Keeper Camacho could have done better with the tame shot. And he seemed to have a hard time getting over that blunder.

It was really, a hard way to end a hard season.

Presentation College hammer Princes Town 8-0 for Intercol semifinal spot
T&T Guardian

Presentation College San Fernando was the last team to advance to the semifinal of the Coca Cola Inter Col competition from the South Zone after they hammered Princes Town 8-0 yesterday in a one-sided affair at the Naparima College Ground, Lewis Street, San Fernando.

Double strikes from Jordan Riley in the 27th and 80th; James Alexis-Leeyaw in the 19th and 42nd and Omri Beard with items in the 70th and 75th did the trick for Presentation, as they left tears in the eyes of the south Champion Division winners who were optimistic of creating an upset after failing to qualify for the Premier Division of the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League next year.

The San Fernando boys also got goals from Tyrel Williams and Kareem Riley in the rout.

Action continues tomorrow with a North Zone clash between Malick and St Mary’s College at the Queen’s Royal College Ground, Serpentine Road from 3.30pm.

Diego upsets Fyzabad for SSFL girls title.
By Rachael Thomspon-King (Guardian).

A new Big Four champion was crowned in the Shell/First Citizen Secondary Schoolgirls Football League on Sunday afternoon when Diego Martin Central upset Fyzabad Secondary 3-1 on penalty kicks after the scores were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation time. This was at St Mary’s ground in Port-of-Spain.

Kaydeen Jack featured early as she has done for the North Zone champion, scoring the opening goal in the 30th minute in an intense match. The lead was short lived though as Fyzabad’s Denecia Prince answered back with a goal, 10 minutes later to level the scores, 1-1, going in at the half.

In the second period, it was Raenique Primus giving the South Zone winner the go ahead goal in the 66th, holding on that advantage for much of the session. That was until Diego skipper Akilah Crawford stepped up in the 80th tied the scores at 2. “It felt really good to win and become the Big Four champs,” said Crawford. “We worked hard and felt nice to get that off our chest.”

The scores remained the same at the end of the regulation and extra time so the winner had to be decided by penalty kicks. Diego went on to take the victory, 3-1 on penalties.

Manager of the Fyzabad unit, Nigel Lakhan, was not too impressed with the officials after the loss, its first for the season. “It was the worst case of officiating I have seen,” said Lakhan. “And I don’t understand why the game wasn’t played at a neutral venue with neutral referees. “I understand that you win some, you lose some. I don’t want to sound like a sore loser but there was quite a number of blatant calls that they missed.”

Fyzabad, booked its spot in the decider, after eliminating St Augustine in their semifinal match. Last year’s winner topped the St Augustine unit, 2-1, to knockoff the two-time Big Four champion.

“Fyzabad has been the best playing team for the season. We have dominated all games. The coaches put in a lot of work,” said Lakhan. “Now we are looking forward to Intercol and we will defend our title.” Diego on the other end got into the final after sealing a 3-1 victory over Tobago champion, Signal Hill School.

“Fyzabad was our toughest opponent,” said captain Crawford. “They played with aggression combined with speed and power but the win has given us confidence going into the Intercol which starts for us on Sunday.”

FINAL

Diego Martin 2 (Kaydeen Jack, Akilah Crawford) vs Fyzabad 2 (Denecia Prince, Raenique Primus).
Diego won 3-1 on penalties.

Saints run amok on Malick.
T&T Express Reports.

St Mary’s College eased past Malick Senior Comprehensive 6-1 in their North Zone Coca Cola InterCol quarterfinal at Fatima Ground, Mucurapo Road yesterday.

With the victory, the Saints advanced to a North Zone semifinal encounter with Trinity College, Moka on Wednesday.

The game was on an even keel for most of the first half after Tyrese Spicer opened the scoring for CIC in the 17th minute, before Malick’s Antonio Graham equalised one minute later.

And even with CIC’s Nathan Hart sending his team ahead in the 32nd, Malick were still in with a chance to get back in the game, going into the second half 2-1 down.

But the floodgates opened in a crucial seven-minute period in the second half to deflate Malick and subject them to a crushing defeat.

In the 52nd minute, Trey La Motte extended the advantage for the boys in blue and white, before Gabriel Nanton added a double in the 54th and 59th minutes to ensure CIC’s progression to the next playoff stage.

And in injury time, Aaron Skeene just rubbed salt into Malick’s wounds to complete the rout.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

T&T Newsday

NAPARIMA have been dethroned as champions of the Coca Cola Intercol competition.

In the other semi-final at the Mahaica Oval, 2016 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premiership title-holders Shiva Boys remained on course for a season double with a 1-0 victory against Fyzabad Secondary.

‘Green Machine’ rolls over Valencia 3-0.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

St Augustine Secondary School, known popularly as ‘The Green Machine’ yesterday made a strong bid to repeat as East Zone Coca Cola InterCol champions by beating Valencia High 3-0 in the feature semi-final match of a double header at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar Arima to qualify for the final next Monday at the same venue.

With the victory they will face San Juan North Secondary, who yesterday edged Trinity College East in the opening game 2-1 in the other semifinal encounter.

The St Augustine boys got a brace from the eventual Man of the Match Rahim Gordon in the 32nd and 81st minute to seal the victory. Kenton James and Zion Holder were the other scorers for the Green Machine while Akil Romero got the lone item for Valencia in the 42nd minute.

In the other game, Trinity East, the East Championship Division winners opened the scoring after just 10 minutes when Nickel Orr found the nets to raise his team’s hopes of an upset in the Intercol. The Michael Grayson-coached school went to the break with a 1-0 advantage, but they faced a revived San Juan outfit on the resumption when Ronaldo Boyce fired in the equalizer in the 62nd minute.

The game seem heading for over time when the prolific Brandon Semper sealed the win for San Juan with his goal in the 89th minute. Semper was later named Man of the Match, but there were no feelings of sorrow from coach Grayson who told the Trinidad Guardian his team had achieved what it had set about to.

“At the beginning of the season we said we wanted to return to the Premier Division and reach as far as possible in the Coca Cola InterCol and we have done that. We won the Championship Division and reached the semifinal in the InterCol, so I think we did well” Grayson said after the game.

He noted “The boys had to make some adjustments playing for a coach like me and I think they have really worked hard for the season, so I am really satisfied with their performance.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Trinity survive to face Tigers…St Mary’s, Mucurapo go down in North Zone semis
By Garth Wattley (T&T Express)

Regulation time was about up when Temesgn Tezera came off the Trinity College Moka bench and onto the field in Coca-Cola InterCol; no doubt with spot kicks in mind. And indeed, he would have the final kick in the North Zone semi-final against St Mary’s College.

It came in the sudden death phase of the penalty shootout with the scores level at 4-4 when calmly, he sent St Mary’s goalkeeper Jordan Baidaisee the wrong putting the ball in the bottom left-hand corner of the net to give his side a 5-4 win, passage to the final against St Anthony’s College and start a joyous pitch invasion by his schoolmates.

The band of players and classmates didn’t make it all the way around the track at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, but when they stopped, the St Mary’s players were still in centre field, too stricken to move.

They had just lost a war of attrition with a spirited Trinity side; a war the Saints could have won in the final six minutes or so of regulation time. But the combination of Gabrial Nanton and substitute Daniel Conocchiari could not put away one of three chances in that frenzied period.

Both were denied by desperate bodies and legs in Trinity green around the 85thminute. And just before that, Nanton, with the chance of the match, shot straight at Trinity captain and goalkeeper Desean Bowen from inside the six-yard box following a misplaced clearance. Those series of events, plus the play three minutes before the end of the first half when Nanton struck the right upright from just outside the six-yard zone will run like a nightmare clip of what might have been for the St Mary’s players.

They had better control of the ball and better chances in a game which did not produce a host of them. But Trinity for the most part defended with determination, and might even have had a penalty in the first half when left-side attacker Josiah Joseph-- an ever-present danger to the St Mary’s defence-- went down under a challenge that on another day may have earned his side a spot kick. The Trinity boys didn’t get it then, but sub Tezera eventually made sure that the Saints paid the penalty.

In the second match at the Stadium, the Tigers from St Anthony’s did not need a shootout to get past East Mucurapo Secondary, as they won 3-1 with goals from Haile Beckles (2) and Man-of-the-Match Che Benny. And in Central, Gasparillo Secondary and Carapichaima Secondary will meet in the final following 4-0 and 5-0 wins respectively over Presentation College Chaguanas and Chaguanas North Secondary.

Yesterday’s results:
North Zone semi-finals

Trinity Moka 0 St Mary’s 0 (Trinity Moka won 5-4 on kicks from penalty mark)
St Anthony’s 3 (Haile Beckles 2, Che Benny) vs East Mucurapo 1 (Jesse Williams)

Central Zone semi-finals
Gasparillo 4 (Shadukem Joseph 3, Joshua Walker) vs Chaguanas North 0
Carapichaima East 5 (Mecachiel Alexander 2, Theophilus Bourne, Josiah King, Brandon St Clair) vs Presentation Chaguanas 0

Today’s fixtures
Shell/First Citizens Girls InterCol
South semis

St Anthony’s, Trinity in North Intercol final
T&T Newsday

ST ANTHONY’S and Trinity Moka have advanced to the North Zonal Final of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Coca- Cola Intercol competition.

The North Zonal Final is carded to take place on November 25 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo.

In yesterday’s pair of North Zonal Semi-Finals, St Anthony’s eased past East Mucurapo 3-1 while Trinity Moka eliminated St Mary’s 5-4, courtesy kicks from the penalty spot, after the scores were locked at 0-0 at the end of regulation time.

St Anthony’s, also known as the “Westmoorings Tigers”, took the lead in the third minute through Haile Beckles, who left East Mucurapo defender Sherlon Roberts for dead on the left before angling his right-footed shot past goalkeeper Terral Cambridge.

Beckles doubled his account in the 38th, capitalising on a defensive mix-up, racing behind the defence and slotting the ball to the right of Cambridge.

National Under-17 midfielder Che Benny got his name on the scoresheet in the 59th, with a close-range rebound after Cambridge parried a cross from the right. Jesse Williams pulled one back for East Mucurapo in the 89th, heading past goalie Oba Augustine after a goalmouth scramble.

Earlier, penalties were required to determine the winner of the Trinity Moka-St Mary’s contest.

Trinity Moka were rewarded with successful spot-kicks from Desean Bowen, Saleem Henry, Isaiah Alexander, Zaki Skinner and Temesgen Tezera. Scoring for St Mary’s were Mattheaus Granger, Elijah Joseph, Nathan Harte and A Van Low. Carapichaima East and Gasparillo progressed to the Central Zonal Final after comfortable victories over Presentation Chaguanas and Chaguanas North in their respective semis.

In the latter fixture, Carapichaima got two goals from Mikel Alexander and one apiece from Theophilus Borde, Josiah King and Brandon St Clair, as they trounced Presentation Chaguanas 5-0. Earlier at Couva, Gasparillo brushed aside Chaguanas North 4-0.

The Central Zonal Final will be contested at the Ato Boldon Stadium next Tuesday.

Intercol action will resume tomorrow with the first Zonal Final on the agenda.

SSFL Premiership winners Shiva Boys will square off against Presentation San Fernando in the South Zonal Final, at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, from 3.30 pm.

Henry doubles up on Bishop’s.
By Rachael Thomspon-King (Guardian).

Henry netted a double which aided in St Augustine Secondary copping the Shell/First Citizens Girls Intercol East Zone title at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima, yesterday. The Green Machine sealed a 3-1 victory on penalty kicks over Bishop’s Anstey East after the scores were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and extra time.

It was an unfortunate outcome for the Bishop’s unit, which scored first, thanks to Jalene Sobers. She hit the back of the net in the 10th minute to give her team the lead. Her teammate Jaasiel Forde doubled that advantage six minutes later, to put Bishop’s ahead 2-0.

Henry featured next and she was able to place the ball past the Bishop’s keeper in the 27th from the penalty spot as “Gustine” battled to make a comeback. However the scores remained unchanged at 2-1, at the close of the first half.

On the resumption, neither team could find the net and Bishop’s looked set to pull off the win. That was until Henry came good once again and netted the lone goal of the session, levelling the scores at 2. There was no changes at the end of regulation and during extra time.

Penalties seperated the two teams with St Augustine connecting three compared to Bishop’s one.

The Gustine team now awaits the winner of the North Zone final between, Diego Martin Central and Bishop’s Anstey Port-of-Spain which is set for Sunday at 3.30 pm. On that day also, Signal Hill will challenge Mason Hall for the Tobago Intercol crown at the same time.

Crystal Toney led Mason Hall into the title match, notching four goals to guide her team to a 5-0 win. In the other semifinal, Avonell Loraine hit three items to see Signal Hill to victory, by the same margin.

In South semifinals, defending girls Intercol champion Fyzabad Secondary will meet Pleasantville Secondary after both claimed huge victories against San Fernando East and St Joseph’s Convent, respectively. Fyzabad scored a 7-0 win while Pleasantville eased to a 15-0 triumph.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Shiva Boys, Pres clash for South InterCol title

Shiva Boys, Pres clash for South InterCol title
T&T Guardian

Shiva Boys Hindu College, newly crowned Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division champions will look to add another title to its coffers when it faces Presentation College of San Fernando in the South Zone Coca-Cola Inter-Col final at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella from 3.30 pm, this afternoon.

It will be the second meeting between both schools this season, after Shiva Boys opened its Premier Division campaign with a 3-1 win at Irwin Park Recreation Ground, Siparia in September.

Led by the attacking players Tyrell Emmanuel, Junior Assoon, Aaron Rodney, his older brother Quinn Rodney, Judah Garcia, and with national Under-20 goalkeeper Denzil James between the uprights, Shiva Boys will no doubt start as firm favourites.

But coach Hayden Ryan who led the Penal-based school to its first national title last month will be well aware of his opponents quest to avenge a league defeat.

Shiva Boys kicked off their zonal Inter-Col campaign with a 3-0 defeat of St Benedict’s College and then pipped Fyzabad Secondary 1-0 in their semifinal courtesy a late strike from Aaron Rodney.

And looking ahead to the final, team manager Sheldon Maharaj said his technical staff and players are all focus on the task ahead.

“We know that every team will be coming at us hard as we are the new Premier Division champions and we will be ready for that.

“Presentation has been a consistent team throughout the season and coming off a win against Naparima College, they are expected to be on a high, but we are confident as well.

Going into the match, Maharaj said a few players who were nursing injuries should be able to make the grade.

He added, “Tyrell Emmanuel missed the match against Fyzabad but should be available along with Garcia, who returned from the Digicel Kick Stars Mancehster City with a knock as well.

One player who is certain to miss the match according to Maharaj is Under-16 stand-out Ronald Charles, who suffered a broken leg in an Under-16 SSFL Division match versus Naparima on Tuesday.

“Charles is done for the season and it will be added motivation for us to go out and win it for him as well,” ended Maharaj.

Presentation was runner-up to Naparima College in the South Zone Inter-Col final last year and also ended this year’s Premier Division as second placed finishers behind Shiva Boys.

However, in this year’s zonal Inter-Col semifinal, Presentation exacted revenge on Naparima with a 4-2 penalty kicks win after a 0-0 draw and team manager Anrde Benjamin said his team has been boosted by that win.

“We had a relative good league campaign and to end our two-year winless drought against Naparima in the semifinal was a great boost to the team,” said Benjamin.

“Shiva Boys got the better of us in the opening match of the season, but as a team we are very eager to go a step further than we did last season and we are very confident that we have the quality in our team to do so,” added Benjamin.

For today’s final, Benjamin and coach Shawn Cooper will have the services of three of its national players available team captain Kareem Riley, Nion Lammy and Jerren Jackie while Kori Cupid missed out through injury.

Congrats to the South Zone champions!

Regarding the penalties: 2-1??

In several recent matches, at all levels locally, the penalty kicking has been woeful. Whaitis really going on?

Gray comes up big as Pres takes South Inter-Col title.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Goalkeeper Jabari Gray made two saves in the penalty-kicks shoot-out as Presentation College of San Fernando went a step further than last year by lifting the South Zone Secondary Schools Football League Coca-Cola Inter-Col crown with a 2-1 win over Shiva Boys Hindu College at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, yesterday, from the penalty spot.

This after both teams played out a pulsating 2-2 draw in regulation-time with Shiva Boys, the newly crowned Premier Division champions twice coming from behind.

Runners-up to Naparima College last year in the zonal Inter-Col final and this year in the Premier Division league, Presentation College was first to strike in the ninth minute when a left-footed right-sided free-kick taken by Terrell Williams , managed to sneak under a weak attempt at a save from Shiva Boys and national Under-20 goalkeeper Denzil Smith.

However, on the half-hour mark, Shiva Boys drew level when Judah Garcia played in Tyrell Baptiste on the right side of the Presentation 18-yard-box, and without hesistation te latter blasted past goalkeeper Gray and into the far corner.

Three minutes before the half-time whistle, Baptiste almost put Shiva Boys ahead, but with Gray off his line, the Shiva Boys striker hesitated and allowed the Presentation defence to retreat and clear away the attempt.

On the resumption, bot h teams started brightly with Shiva Boys again coming close through Ronaldo Edwards, with a right footer on a break-away which skimmed the cross-bar.

However, Presentation College, beaten 3-1 by Shiva Boys in the opening match of the league season looked to have steal a late winner, when Nion Lammy found some space in the 18-yard box, and on his favoured left foot, hammered past Smith into the roof of the net to spark of wild celebrations among the supporters who included President, His Excellency Anthony Carmona.

But there was still a late twist to the the contest as directly from the restart, Shiva Boys captain Tyrell “Pappy” Emmanuel unleashed a ‘hail Mary” attempt from on the half-line which caught Gray off his line to tie up the scores at 2-2, silencing the Presentation supporters while sending the Shiva Boys “posse” into a frenzy and the match into penalty-kicks.

What was briefly celebration for Shiva Boys soon turned to a somber mood as key players, Quinn Rodney, Baptiste and Shaquille Williams all saw their efforts come back off the cross-bar and post respectively, while Jordan Riley and Darnell Hospedales scored for Presentation with Kareem Riley having his attempt saved.

Emmanuel then kept Shiva Boys in the match by converting the fourth attempt and his team’s first while Lammy turned villain by skying his attempt high overbar with victory within grasp.

It was now left up to Yohannes Richardson to keep Shiva Boys in the match, but Gray was up to the task and moved low to his left to pull off the save and with it, victory for the Shawn Cooper-coached Presentation squad, on Presentation College Day, a perfect gift to the school.

With the win, Presentation also advanced to the national semifinal against the winner of the quarterfinal encounter between the Tobago and Central Zone Inter-Col champions, while the North and East Inter-Col champions face off in the other national semifinal.

‘Pres’ claim South Inter-Col title.
By Donstan Bonn (Express).

Yesterday’s Coca-Cola South Zone InterCol final between Shiva Boys Hindu College and Presentation College San Fernando (Pres) was expected to be a very tight contest. In the end it took kicks from the penalty spot to hand ‘Pres’ a 2-1 margin victory after the teams battled to an exciting 2-2 draw in regulation time.

The atmosphere at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella was reminiscent of a World Cup qualifying match at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and Shiva, who were seeking to add the Intercol title to their Premier Division crown, threatened early through Quinn Rodney who flicked over the head of Mylz Barrington in the third minute to get on the edge of the 18-metre box before being fouled.

However, Pres would settle quickly and gradually start to dominate possession with star midfielder and captain Kareem Riley orchestrating their attacks in tandem with Darnell Hospedales and Jordan Riley.

Pres made their aggression pay in the ninth minute when Terrell Williams curled a 20-metre free kick past goalkeeper Denzil Smith to give them the lead and make up for the one he sent wide off a foul on Hospedales two minutes earlier.

Tyrel Baptiste almost drew Shiva level six minutes on when he chipped Jabari Gray in goal for Pres, only for the ball to drop onto the top of the crossbar and out of play.

But Pres responded with two chances of their own; first Riley (K) played James Lee Yaw played in but his weak back-heeled effort was cleared by the defence and then Riley had a searing right-footed drive from 20 metres out push brilliant over by Smith, who injured himself in the process, causing an eight minute stop to proceedings while he received medical attention.

With Pres dominating possession and their supporters chanting, Let’s go Riley, let’s go, in support of their captain, Shiva would draw level on the half hour mark against the run of play. Judah Gracia found himself in space on the edge of the area and picked out an unmarked Baptiste, who easily beat Gray with an angled shot to the bottom right corner of goal.

The end to end action continued with Smith tipping away a left side corner in the 40th minute, while Gray did well to deny Baptiste in the 43rd, coming off his line to narrow angle before getting his finger to the shot to nullify the attack.

Having gone into the break on level terms, Shiva began to see more of the ball in the second half and should have taken the lead in the 56th minute. Rodney did well on the left flank to get around Shirwin Noel and deliver a pinpoint cross to Ronaldo Edwards, who shot over from on the edge of the six-metre box. And in an immediate counter attack Pres was denied by Smith, who got down low to his right to reel in a Riley (K) shot after the midfielder was found with yards of space by Riley (J).

Both team began to show signs of weariness in the final 10 minutes, with their passing becoming erratic while several players began cramping up, so when Lammy unleashed a powerful left-footer that beat Smith at his near post in the 90th minute, after he was played in by Juaval Roberts, Pres thought they had the game won. But Shiva responded immediately.

Tyrel Emmanuel spotted Gray off his line and sent a high, arching shot from within his own half of the field that eluded the back-peddling goalkeeper to land at the back of the net to spark a deafening roar from the stands and chants of “Let’s go Shiva, let’s go.

With the final whistle coming with the team locked on two goals apiece, the match went to kicks from the penalty spot to decide a winner. And it was here that Shiva imploded. Their first three kicker all failed to find the target as Rodney struck the crossbar, Baptiste struck the upright and Shaquille Williams shot overbar, while Riley (J) and Hosepdales converted for Pres.

And although Emmanuel beat Gray to keep Shiva alive, the shot blocker got it right when he went to his left to punch away Yohannes Richardson’s effort to give Pres the win. In the end coach Sean Cooper’s pre-match prediction that “lightning doesn’t strike the same place on different days”, in reference to Pres’ 3-1 loss to Shiva early in the season, proved right.
