Clayton ClarkeKevin Roberts (Pt Fortin New Jets) scored an impressive jump double at the 2012 Morvant Jets Games which took place at Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Saturday and Sunday. Roberts won the men’s high jump (1.95) and long jump (7.04) with personal best performances. The recently crowned national and junior Octathlon champion beat Akem Graham of Mustangs (1.75) and Victor Isaac, Toco TAFAC (1.60) for the high jump title. The St Benedicts College student then edged Shannon Salazar (Petrotrin P/Seco) by 1cm in the long jump event with triple jump winner Akeel Edwards of Toco taking the bronze (6.91). Roberts is one of 40 athletes who have been selected to represent T&T at the 2012 Central American and Caribbean Junior Track and Field Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador from June 29 to July 1.
Carifta champions Chelsea James and Kenejah Williams were among the double winners at the two day meet. Aaron Andrews (Southern Athletics), Gwendolyn Smith (Petrotrin P/Seco), Kenejah Williams (Tobago Falcons), Elton Bollers (Guyana), Ornesto Thomas (Guyana), Atiba Samuel (Petrotrin P/Seco), Travis Diaz (Penal), Nikita Paul (Concorde), Caliyah Wallace(Cougars) and Joshua Lewis (Memphis) were the others. Carifta girls under-17 shot put champion James (Tobago Falcons) took the girls under-17 shot put (14.29 and discus (32.70) while her clubmate Williams, who took the Carifta boys under 17 discus title, secured the Morvant Jets discus (50.74-pb) and shot put (15.78) crowns.
Andrews sailed away with the boys under-17 200m (22.53) and 400m (50.64) titles. Smith, a 2012 double World Masters indoor winner landed the women’s shot put (12.38) and javelin (43.42) while Bollers beat the local field in the boys under-20 100m (10.88) and 200m (21.51). His compatriot Thomas retained the boys under-17 1500m title (4:17.44) came out on top in 800m (1:59.05). Samuel completed anotherboys under 15 800/1500 triumph as he did at the National Juvenile champs in 2:10.13 and 4:31.78 respectively. Diaz held on to his boys under 20 1500m crown (4:23.93) and was first to the line in the two lap event (2:00.83). Paul sped away with the girls under 15 100m (12.34) and 200m (26.19) while Wallace was the best in the girls under-11 80m (11.67) and 150m (20.84) with Lewis snatching the boys under 9 60m (9.28) and 150 (21.78). This year’s meet was held in honour of founding member and coach Frankie Francis.
