Football / Sunderland lose Chimbonda to Spurs

Chimbonda secures Spurs return

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed the club have signed Pascal Chimbonda from Sunderland.

The French defender returns to White Hart Lane just six months after leaving North London for the Black Cats.

Chimbonda, who had grown unsettled in the North East, underwent a medical at Spurs on Monday before agreeing personal terms.

Thr 29-year-old will not, however, be available for Tottenham's Premier League match against Stoke City on Tuesday after he missed the registration deadline.

"I've signed him and he's coming here," Redknapp said.

"The deal should have been done in the morning but it's over-run the deadline for him to play against Stoke.

"It was done 15 minutes too late which was disappointing. Otherwise he would have been available."

Football / Tony Warner's first start for Hull City

Trouble spoils Tigers' win

Hull City booked their place in the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-0 win over Millwall in a match marred by crowd trouble.

A goal in each half saw the Tigers through in a largely forgettable encounter although the contest is likely to be best remembered for some unsavoury incidents off the field.

Riot police were called in before the kick-off as visiting supporters charged home fans in the north east corner of the ground.

And as the game slipped away from the Lions following Ian Ashbee's fine strike to put the Tigers two goals up following Michael Turner's opener, visiting supporters appeared to rip up and hurl seats at home fans.

As the final whistle sounded, mounted police made their way onto the pitch to make sure trouble did not spill onto the playing area.

Some Tigers fans stayed behind at the final whistle to taunt their visitors but fortunately the rival groups were kept apart by scores of stewards and police.

On the pitch, the game lacked quality and was littered with fouls from both sides. Referee Stuart Attwell was kept busy and booked six players in the second half.

Yet Hull always looked the stronger side and had the better of possession throughout.

Millwall lacked bite but were never out of the game and former Lions goalkeeper Tony Warner looked uneasy on his first City start.

Peter Halmosi had the first opportunity of the game with a long-range shot straight at David Forde.

Hull made their superiority count in 15th minute as Turner further underlined the danger he poses from set-pieces.

The hosts won a free-kick on the right after Sam Ricketts was fouled by Andy Frampton and Andy Dawson, returning after two months out injured, crossed for Turner to head home.

Frampton then escaped a penalty claim after Hull appealed for handball following a Ricketts cross.

Stumbled
Izale McLeod, making his full debut after joining on loan from Charlton, had Millwall's first opportunity after jinking into the area but his scuffed shot did not trouble Warner.

Hull survived a real scare after 33 minutes following a howler by Warner.

The Hull keeper stumbled after failing to control a routine back pass from Ashbee and was forced to dive on the ball as McLeod threatened to nip in and score.

Attwell had no option other than to give an indirect free-kick inside the area but Warner was spared further emabarrassment as Lewis Grabban shot wide.

Dawson required treatment for a head injury shortly before the interval after a collision which Hull felt warranted further action from Attwell.

Millwall should have equalised in first-half injury time when McLeod nodded down a David Martin cross but Marc Laird missed the target.

Manucho had his first chance five minutes into the second half but shot well over from Halmosi's cross.

The game became even scrappier but Hull looked the stronger side and Dean Marney was the next to have an opportunity with a strong run and shot, which was blocked.

Nicky Featherstone replaced Halmosi after 65 minutes and crossed for Manucho but the Angola international headed straight at Forde.

Caleb Folan came on for Manucho and was soon in Attwell's book after fouling Chris Hackett.

Hull skipper Ashbee wrapped up the game with his stunning effort late on.

Hull countered and Ashbee powered forward to blast home from the edge of the box after being set up by Daniel Cousin.

It was a rare moment of brilliance on an uninspiring afternoon but the game soon returned to type with Folan lucky to escape a second booking for another foul.

The final whistle was greeted by the sight of mounted police riding up the side of the pitch to prevent a repeat of earlier trouble.

Fortunately the ground appeared to empty without any further clashes.

Guys we forgot about Tony Warner!!! He got a start between the sticks for Hull City in their 2-0 win over Millwall in the FA Cup. Some reports suggest that he was shaky but got the clean sheet nevertheless.  :beermug:

Is it just me or doesn't this seem like a conflict of interest?  ??? We have an Assistant National Coach, who would have an influence on the selection of the National side lining up with a local Pro league team? Suppose for example that Theobald makes it back in the good graces of the national squad, justified or not, would not such a decision be viewed as being biased?

Wolves miss out on Edwards

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed Sunderland turned down his request to re-sign Carlos Edwards on loan.

Edwards made six appearances for the Championship leaders during a six-week stint at Molineux earlier this season.

After a deal for Rangers winger Alan Gow fell through, McCarthy asked to take Edwards on loan for a second time.

However, the Wolves chief revealed that new Sunderland boss Ricky Sbragia considers the Trinidad & Tobago international part of his plans.

"Carlos is staying at Sunderland," McCarthy told the club's official website

"I've spoken to Ricky who said he played well against Bolton and he's staying.

"If it's any consolation I told him that I'd have kept him as well, but I only did that after he told me his decision!"

I believe that is generated by the network (added) Kinda like how in NFl they show you the yards to go kinda thing on the field while the players are getting set. If it were the grounds that were doing it, it would cast a shadow (or be on them as they moved) onto the player..I would think.

Correct. Just like the NFL's yellow lines. Generated by the network for their viewing audience only.

English is a hell of a thing... This seems like reported speech to me, but I could be wrong.

"Birchall said that he had no fears over his fitness as if he did sign with San Jose, he would have the option of staying on and training with Brighton or another  English club up until his switch to the MLS in February."

1036
No... Birchall clarified all that in this interview with Shaun Fuentes!

http://www.socawarriors.net/foreign-based/4821-birchall-has-big-decision-to-make.html

Birchall was the one who called the name of the team...

1037
Wait a second!! First Birchall says that he has a "massive" decision to make with regards to accepting a contract with the Earthquakes or staying in England. But San Jose saying they never see him in a competitive fixture and for them it went cold!! So who lie?? ??? Did he get offered a contract in the first place?? Is Birchall trying to gain leverage on a possible Brighton deal?? What's the real story here?

BIG DECISION FOR BIRCHALL... To Go MLS Or Not

Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Chris Birchall has a major career decision to make at the start of 2009 – Whether to stay in England or make the move over to the United States Major League Soccer.

IT was reported on BBC on Wednesday that the English-born player was heading to USA after completing his loan deal with Carlisle United but Birchall confirmed today that such is not the case.

He has two options which involves a deal offered by MLS club San Jose Earthquakes and has also been invited for a try out with Brighton by Micky Adams, the man who signed him at Coventry City from Port Vale following the 2006 World Cup.

“It’s a massive decision for me to make as far as my career goes and it’s one which Ill have to think very carefully about and decide in maybe two weeks,” Birchall told TTFF Media on Thursday. “But at the moment I haven’t made any final decisions on going to the US.”

He will join Brighton on a one-week training stint after which Adams is expected to make an offer while San Jose head coach Frank Yallop wants him to sign with the club and join them for preseason training in February. Yallop also wants Cornell Glen while Toronto FC is showing interest in Keon Daniel and Aklie Edwards has also caught the attention of another MLS club.

Now if Birchall goes to the USA, he is considering the fact that it will allow him to be closer to Trinidad during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers as well as give him the chance to join the team in a live-in training camp in Argentina in the build up to the match against El Salvador on February 11. Birchall said that he had no fears over his fitness as if he did sign with San Jose, he would have the option of staying on and training with Brighton or another  English club up until his switch to the MLS in February.

“Coventry paid me off and I spent my time at Carlisle where I’ve played a series of Reserve games and also had some brief appearances for the first team so I’m fitter than I was at Coventry. At Carlisle I’d been playing 90 minutes of Reserve football in midweek as well as getting runs with the first team on the weekend.

“I’m in a far better position now than I was at Coventry because both these new offers can be beneficial for me but I’ve got to take a good look along with my agent and see which  is the better one,” Birchall said. “I’ll know more and come to a firm decision in maybe two weeks as far as my future lies.

“The fact that going to the US will mean I’m closer to Trinidad is definitely something that I will think about  and fitness wise I’m not worried because I will definitely be active in England before the MLS season starts. But I’m heading to Brighton on Monday for a week because my old manager Micky Adams wants me there and if I do well enough in that time then there’s the possibility of them putting a decent deal on the table.”

Birchall also shared his thoughts on the 2009 period as it relates to international football with T&T and one of the things he spoke about was the desire to put away any and all differences that may have plagued the team in the past

“I think we are all really eager to get the situation regarding the World Cup bonuses out of the way. We need to throw out that argument and I think that will definitely happen in the new year. Since I’ve been back it’s been exciting because we all realize that we can play some good football and be a force to be reckoned with while having our best players in the team.

“Jack Warner had some words with me when I got back into the team and in some way he apologized for whatever ways the football may have been affected. I personally appreciate everything he’s done for me and I think the other players feel the same too. He brought me from League One football into the international stage and a World Cup and there’s nothing in my career that I appreciate more than that. The last thing I want to do is get into a fight with the Vice President of FIFA, so we definitely want to get this issue out of the way and focus on reaching the next World Cup,” Birchall added.

“This year (2009) is going to be a really exciting one because we’ve put ourselves in a great position, even better than in 2006 I think. We have done the hardest part which was getting into the final round because we faced a tricky contest to get there. We’ve been in this position before and I think with the blend of youth and experience we have now… we can definitely be a force. I feel we can be in with a great chance of winning all our home games and looking for points on the road which should put us in a fine position on the standings.”

Birchall also made his feelings known on the appointment of Russell Latapy as assistant coach.

“It’s not a surprise to any of us. I think we are more than happy now that it’s a done deal and a bonus to the rest of the team. We can learn loads about the game in every aspect from Russell and it’s nice to have him in a capacity where we can speak to each other and he can share his ideas with the head coach and vice versa. We are definitely looking forward to working with him in a way that is going to be more than a teammate relationship,” Birchall concluded.

Fuller faces uncertain future
Potters striker acknowledges final decision lies with club

Stoke City striker Ricardo Fuller recognises he faces an uncertain future at the Britannia Stadium following his bust-up with captain Andy Griffin.

Fuller was sent off for slapping his skipper during Sunday's 2-1 away defeat by West Ham, sparking speculation the Jamaica international could be sold in January.

Chairman Peter Coates insists the forward will not be leaving, but rumour continues to suggest that the Potters could look to cash in.

And Fuller confesses that he is unsure as to whether he has a future with the Premier League new boys and acknowledges the final decision lies with the club.

"Who knows?" Fuller told Sky Sports News when asked if he had a future at Stoke.

Provoked
"It is up to the club. I give my all for Stoke, maybe I give too much and that is maybe why I am in this position.

"I always try to do so much for Stoke City. I am a Stoke City player and that is all I care about.

"It is up to them. Anything that goes, goes. I am okay. I love to do football work for Stoke City. It is up to the club."

Meanwhile, Fuller has revealed that he was provoked by Griffin during the incident, which occurred immediately after West Ham has equalised Abdoulaye Faye's opener.

"I said to him, 'Griff, clear the ball out' and he was very rude and disrespectful," added Fuller when asked why the confrontation occurred.

Grudge
"What he said was bad but what I did was worse."

But Fuller is adamant that there will be no long-standing grudge with Griffin and insists the incident is now in the past.

"That is how it goes in football. You want to do so well that these things happen," he added.

"I am sorry for the fans, especially, and for costing the team three points.

"These things happen and hopefully it doesn't happen again.

"It is all done and dusted. I am looking forward to the New Year and hopefully it will be a better one."

De MLS league done and will start back in April 2009, why didn't Birchall stay in England until April and join some lower team for 3 months just to stay fit ?

I feel Birchall coming in de States to play indoor soccer with Randi Patterson, that is de only league active on this side now.

I also hope Birchall goes Argentina with the T&T team for camp in two weeks.

I doubt an indoor soccer club can offer such a "lucrative" contract that Carlisle would not be able to match. I like the Argentina idea though, he should go if possible.
