VIP summit vehicles arrive in PoS port.
By: Curtis Rampersad (Express).

VIP vehicles to be used during next month's Fifth Summit of the Americas have arrived in Trinidad and Tobago.

Forty-eight Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs and an undisclosed number of Toyota Prados arrived on the Port of Spain port on Wednesday night.

A number of Mazda 6.2 vehicles, which will also be used during the summit, are expected to arrive shortly, president of the Automobile Dealers Association Philip Knaggs told the Express yesterday.

The vehicles comprise the first batch of cars to transport visiting heads of state, their spouses and other delegates during the Fifth Summit and the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Port of Spain in April and November respectively.

Government bought the luxury vehicles from auto dealers Neal & Massy Motors, Southern Sales and Toyota Trinidad and Tobago Ltd at a cost of just over $42 million.

Knaggs said the cars had been delivered on schedule and were being cleared by customs officials at the port yesterday.

He said in a phone interview that the vehicles would be checked, thoroughly cleaned and prepared for delivery to Government in time for the summit.

The cars will be sent to the State next week.

Government announced in December it would buy 80 Toyota Prados, 60 Hyundais and 60 Mazdas for the two conferences and the vehicles would be absorbed into the public service thereafter.

The vehicles must be painted factory gloss black and must hold several pieces of luggage.

The Fifth Summit will be held from April 17-19.

these vehicles in the country since before Wednesday...i got to ride in one to South on Monday night when it was being taken to be prepared. all of these vehicle going to be fully loaded and outfitted with built in DVD players with monitors, etc. i honestly think its an unnecessary expense! why do they need to have DVD players in these vehicles when the heads of state will only be using them for a short period of time over the few days of the summit? and then they will tell us we need to tighten our belts! please!

Six fast patrol boats arrive
Six fast patrol boats arrive

click on pic to zoom inINTERCEPTORS ARRIVE: Police officers of the St James Police Station guard six interceptor boats which arrived and were parked yesterday on the foresho...Six interceptor boats which will be used to guard the country’s coastlines arrived yesterday.

The boats were placed on trailer-trucks at the foreshore of the Audrey Jeffers Highway, Mucurapo to be transported to Teteron Barracks, Staubles Bay, Chaguaramas for inspection.

Two of the six boats will be handed over to the police for use by officers of the revamped Police Marine Branch.

Sources said yesterday the boats are to be diagnostically checked this week before they are handed over to the police and Coast Guard. The presence of the boats at the foreshore yesterday brought curious stares from members of the public.

On Tuesday, Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert said two of the interceptors will be added to the Marine Branch.

He added, “We will find ourselves back in the waters surrounding Trinidad and Tobago after some 27 years to deal with the situation of stemming contraband and illegal immigrants coming into our country.”

Sources revealed that due to the height of the boats they could not pass under the Cocorite Flyover. Steps were taken yesterday to get the Defense Force to make special arrangements to have the boats towed to Teteron.

Three will be given to the Coast Guard, and one will be given to the Special Anti Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago (SAUTT). During the presentation of the 2007/2008 Budget Prime Minister Patrick Manning announced that Government had purchased the interceptors to deal with crime on the high seas.

The Government has forked out close to $22 million to purchase 64 new Ford 2009 Everest Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) which will represent part of the escort detail for the Summit of the Americas, police source said yesterday.
The source said each vehicle was valued at $350,000.

The SUVs were ordered about a year ago from Ford Motors. The source said the vehicles would escort dignitaries, heads of states and delegates for the three-day event scheduled to take place from April 17 to 19. The vehicles, which were all white, were being outfitted with police sirens and stickers bearing the logo of the T&T Police Service, the source said. Officials at Ford Motors were given a mandate to have the vehicles available to the Police Service by the end of next week, the source added. After the summit, the vehicles will be absorbed into the various units within the Police Service.

On the issue of security plans, acting Police Commissioner James Philbert and Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Edmund Dillon received a report yesterday, detailing possible security challenges, the source said. Philbert and Dillon were in a meeting held for the greater part of yesterday at Police Administration building, Port-of-Spain. “Any challenges will be addressed so as to tighten security measures,” the source said. The source said the report was compiled by each “silver commander” responsible for each of the six “sectors” of the national security plan.

Suv features

Features of the Ford Everest SUV:
• 3.0L turbo diesel engine
• Seven-seater
• Four-wheel drive
• Steel side-intrusion door beams to protect from a side impact

Sectors

The sectors were identified as:
Sector 1— Piarco Airport.
Sector 2—Routes.
Sector 3—Hyatt Regency Hotel and other restricted zones and the Diplomatic Centre.
Sector 4—Venues and accommodation.
Sector 5—Wild Fowl Trust, carded to be visited by spouses of diplomats.
Sector 6—Tobago.
The source said Sector One was headed by Senior Supt Rajendranath Maharaj; Sector Two, Theophilus Cummings; Sector Three, acting ACP Martin Morrain; Sector Four, Senior Supt Eulaine Julius; Sector Five, ASP Cecil Santana; and Sector Six acting ACP Nadir Khan.

Summit vehicles for sale
T&T Newsday

THE auction of 33 of the 200 vehicle fleet purchased by the PNM government for the Fifth Summit of the Americas and Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (ChoGM) will take place next month.

This was revealed by Jack Warner, Minister of Works and Transport yesterday as he spoke to the media at a vehicle handing-over ceremony at the VMCOTT compound at Beetham.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad- Bissessar, at last Thursday’s post-Cabinet Press briefing said a total of 110 vehicles were purchased at a cost of $42.4 million for last year’s international meetings were not being used. She said several ministries will be assigned some of the vehicles, and the remaining 33 will be sold by public auction.

Persad-Bissessar said, “the proceeds of sale will be placed in the Children’s Life Fund.. I am advised that given the costs we will recover at the public auction, and the fact they were sitting there relatively new, we should recover some substantial millions to place in the Life Fund to save the lives of our children”.

The Prime Minister said the TT Police Service will also receive 75 vehicles from the 200 fleet to aid in crime-fighting.

In her speech in parliament the Prime Minister recalled that on March 25 last, two vehicles were given to the Grenadian Government to be used in security detail for the Grenadian Prime Minister, Tillman Thomas. Similarly, she noted that it was most unusual.

Persad-Bissessar said it was most unusual for vehicles to be given to another government without any public announcement being made.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
